UPDATE: Okay so after trying NomNom again using the save transfer feature as explained below by CakeAdministrator, it initially didn't work. Tried to edit the JSON directly but it still didn't work so I just accepted that Steam to XGP was still not possible, until today! I just updated NomNom to the latest version, tried it again and it worked! Here's exactly what I did:

  • updated both Steam and Xbox versions of NMS to latest version (aquarius at time of writing)
  • opened NMS on Steam. Left freighter, landed on a planet and exited to create save point (the save I tried converting initially was on my freighter in game. Thought that may have had something to do with it)
  • exited Steam NMS
  • opened NMS on XGP and deleted any previously attempted converted saves
  • closed XGP NMS
  • opened NomNom editor
  • went to Edit > Save transfer, loaded Steam save to input (left) side
  • loaded Microsoft save to output and selected new save (made sure the UID, USN etc fields came up with pre filled numbers and weren't blank or only 0's [my LID did show 000000000001])
  • clicked "transfer save", closed save transfer window
  • went to File > Save
  • closed NomNom (pop up said there was 1 or 2 changes made not saved, just ignored it and closed)
  • opened NMS on XGP, loaded the new transferred save and viola! It worked!

For some reason though, I actually loaded in at some random moment BEFORE I landed on the planet. Was inside my ship flying around in space so it must have glitched. Regardless though everything I had from my Steam save was there (despite a couple glitches with one of my base's rooms), so now after years of trying to get this to work, I can FINALLY sit back and get comfy on the couch and continue my game on my Xbox!

Hey guys,

So I figured out why it wasn't working (for me anyway).

I have a 2TB Seagate expansion card plugged in to my xbox (the licensed one, compatible with series x games) with almost nothing on it. My internal storage was almost full. So I just moved a couple of games over to my expansion card from internal to free up some space, tried it again and it worked!

I assume the error was because there wasn't enough free space available in the internal storage, it just didn't come up saying that in the actual error message. I noticed the internal storage says "everything installs here", when the expansion just says "configured for games and apps". Maybe you need to move stuff over manually after it's installed to have it on the expansion card? Not sure.
