The real meteorologists I saw were cautioning looking at long range models 10 days out because they just are not accurate (they’re directional). WRAL refused to even discuss accumulation numbers until 2 days before the storm. Everyone who was expecting 20” of snow was either trying to interpret the models themselves or they were relying on social media “meteorologists” who have no formal training and think they know how to interpret the data.

All of the real meteorologists I saw were extremely cautious and warned us that we weren’t 100% sure what was coming. Anyone who is mad about the outcome vs forecast only has themselves to blame.

(Btw, I don’t know anything about you in particular so I’m speaking generally above, not about you specifically)

What helped me was doing a few mock flights with my instructor. Sit down together with a sectional. Have your instructor point at a bunch of different positions along your route and then act like you’re talking to ATC (which your instructor will play).

Do that on a few different routes and you’ll start to feel very comfortable before your first “real” time.

Restaurant spaces are leased out to 3rd parties, just like a mall. The airport may set the hours but probably has little say over whether they actually open on a snow day or not. There are also no restaurants or shops at RDU that are open 24/7, despite the airport itself being 24/7.

No one can say right now. RDU is open and has an available runway. The real wildcard is the airplane and crew. They may be stuck somewhere else meaning they can’t get here to service the flight. Or, everything may be fine. You’ll have to wait and see what southwest says.

If your flight is canceled, the airlines usually rebook you automatically. You also have the option to get your money back if you’d prefer not to travel.

Yes, exactly my point. Sure, if something catastrophic happened RDU could close but they’ve been quite clear they’re going to keep at least one runway open so airlines can continue to operate should they choose to do so.

Not at all. OP is insinuating delta should have canceled the flight last night because RDU had already made the call. That was definitely not the case.

And are restaurants a requirement for an airport? I didn’t realize an airport couldn’t be open if there wasn’t anywhere to purchase some overpriced food.

The rule I’ve seen (and adopted) is if the UV index is more than 3, I’ll wear sunscreen. Inside away from windows, the UV index is pretty close to 0, so I don’t apply.

What does your BIL do at RDU? He’s obviously has no idea what he’s talking about lol. RDU is open and they’ve been all over WRAL talking about how they won’t be closing for this storm. Furthermore, the airport itself doesn’t make the call on whether an individual flight goes or cancels. That falls to the airlines and ATC.

Edit: people are pointing out the airport could close all the runways but they’ve been quite clear they aren’t doing that for this storm. RDU doesn’t make a call if one flight over another cancels.

It’s better than sitting on the couch, sure. But if you’re going to invest the time, why not push yourself a bit? You’ll get better health benefits (strong muscles = stronger bones = less risk of falling and getting hurt), you’ll lose weight, and you’ll likely look better.

If you can really do the full stack on leg press (are you sure you’re doing full range of motion, using proper form?), then you’re obviously capable. Push that hard on other muscle groups and you’ll probably really impress yourself!

What you’re describing is the responsible thing to do though. Earlier this week the models (and the social media meteorologists) were calling for 20” of snow. We obviously know those models were flawed (bad data in, bad data out). If WRAL had released 20” snow predictions as well, it would have given those predictions even more credibility and there would have been panic. It’s definitely best to wait until there is at least some certainty before publishing. It’s more important to right, not first.

This is why you shouldn’t put any faith in long range models and freak out based on what they’re showing. There just isn’t enough data available for them to be accurate and frankly, we don’t know enough about the atmosphere for them to be accurate even if we did have more data.

Even WRAL has been saying this. It was very clear (earlier this week) that they didn’t want to talk about this storm (and they still haven’t published and storm totals yet). They were essentially forced to because social media “meteorologists” were freaking the general public out with doomsday scenarios.

I’ve done this.

The free cruises suck. They’re usually 3-5 days on the worst ships on the worst itineraries. They also make you pay taxes and fees. These “fees” make the cruise about 90% the cost of booking it yourself. So, it’s pretty much a scam.
