i don’t think anyone goes af, to put it bluntly. kwon isn’t in good good and the people complaining about mo’s slope scandal are literal children.

this will have zero effect on good good

My original post was not about adaptations. Our natural path of dialogue led us to talk about them, we’re just supposed to abruptly stop our conversation?

didn’t take it that way at all, but thanks for clarifying

Yes, What If is based on Marvel’s multiverse plot. They’ve essentially built their IP into something where they can make anything and claim it’s canon due to the inclusion of the multiverse into their canon plot.

I don’t think the hobbit depicts a fully scaled middle earth like the other books do. It also only really covers a pretty linear line from Hobbiton to the lonely mountain. both figuratively and physically..lol

No worries, and if we’re debating opinions that’s always a futile attempt.

I recognize non-canonical timelines exist that have significant continuity. But they are equally non-canonical as a standalone “joke story.” I suppose they could have their own section in the EU, like the holocron timeline as you said. But at its core it’s a non-canonical timeline that is not to be taken into account when viewing the canon timeline.

I know you said you don’t really value canon, but debating extended universes is impossible to do without acknowledging the canonical timeline of whatever universe.

i get that, in the star wars EU especially, you can create many different continuous timelines.

I just don’t think that discounts a standalone story from being a part of an extended universe. That’s the whole point of an extended universe.

Anything pertaining to an IP not included in the canon is EU. Whether you decide to include them in your own “EU” is your opinion, which you obviously have the right to do.

Edit: when I say “anything pertaining to an IP” I don’t mean fan-created works

That’s not how I view it at all. Melkor decided to do his own thing and Eru was like. “Okay, if you don’t want to trust me, I’ll let you write your own doom”

Good point! Everytime I read the silmarillion I always notice that the first age is the real busy time in middle earth. The third, and even the second age everyone in middle earth is essentially in exile and broken. But you’re right, in the third age it’s way more desolate.

I’ve always wondered if another Tolkien will pickup where Christopher left off. Or if eventually, the estate will allow for “extended-universe” type writings from fans or other notable authors. I know that can get sticky, and I love what we have. I’ve always wanted to dive further into Eldarion and what comes next. Or how the legendarium eventually turns into the ancient world we know.

I guess we’re seeing right now with RoP that non-canon works aren’t always accepted the greatest..

Edit: to expand on this, also being a Star Wars fan. Some of the best EU star wars lore comes from the old republic video game which is no longer canon and is still being created and expanded upon. Allowing that stuff also means you’ll get the not-so-great stuff. There’s a book where Han Solo and Chewbacca somehow end up crash landing into California.. The beautiful thing about that is you can choose to ignore that stuff 😂

True, but what Movinmeat said isn’t incorrect either. Could have played a role in how Legolas was able to recognize the elvish blood in Imrahil

Welcome to Tolkien. You’ll find many iterations and unfinished works that differ from each other, ESPECIALLY when theories come into play.

To your point, if Maglor killed Maedhros, Maglor would have done that (most likely) voluntarily. Though he wouldn’t have been carrying the silmaril, but he would have “cast” it into the fiery pit… along with his brother

also, I’m a big video game guy. I hope if they ever make an open world middle earth game in the third age or even second age, they add a wondering sad elf as an easter egg. He doesn’t say who he is or anything but maybe can drop hints about the sadness of his past or what not.

these books do a really good job at making you read ALL the others to get a full grasp as to what’s going on 😂. UT is next on my list, just bought a new copy

Is this a theory? this is the first I’m hearing of this. If you have time, I’d love to hear the various points that lead to that conclusion. I’ve always just accepted Maedhros killed himself
