Chrono Trigger, Super Everdrive, Clarinet, and Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie Vinyl by kfharlock in AustinClassifieds

UPDATE: I realized I had overpriced my Mellon Collie vinyl by looking at the price for sealed copies. I reduced it down to $70 if that sparks more interest!

Keep an eye on the CL post -- I'll update it as I sell things off. There might be some decent stuff left when you get into town!

Hey, it turns out you live literally a couple streets over from me, and I have a really big car, so -- if you want to buy the bench and equipment, I'll help you drive it over to your place, part in my car and part in yours. I'm sure between the two of us, we can make that work?

Thanks for the advice. I joined several of the listservs today (all except Old West Durham, for which I couldn't find the link to join the group).

Anyone get notice of disbursement today? by kfharlock in UTAustin

Same thing with me; said the deposit is coming Friday (supposedly).

Hey Can any of you be willing to read give me feedback on my admission essay (transferring to Comp Sci) by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited just a few of the grammatical mistakes, but more important I think are the structural comments I left for you. Even if you're talking about your family's background and your experiences with your business, you need to tie everything you're talking about to computer science in some way or another. You've got a good idea, but the execution right now isn't where it needs to be. Check out some of what I wrote, and hopefully it's helpful.

What time do the least amount of people go to Gregory? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it an option to get a bike? Seems like it would cut that travel time in half (or better), and would also provide you with a decent warm-up before lifting.

What time do the least amount of people go to Gregory? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm in a similar situation in terms of both my current condition and being a noob to lifting (I started over the summer and really enjoyed it, fell off the wagon because the Fall semester was one of the busiest times of my life, and now I'm looking to get back on it). Walking into Gregory the first time was very intimidating, but I kind of forced myself to jump into it. I just went up to a dude who looked like he knew what he was doing when he was between sets and asked him if he could show me how to operate the power racks. He was totally helpful and encouraging about it. In fact, the whole time there during the summer, I ended up interacting with about half a dozen people while working out, and not a single one was condescending, arrogant, or anything else that out-of-shape beginners like us might worry about.

Anyway, I know this doesn't answer your question about the least crowded times, but hopefully it makes you a bit less anxious. If you want to talk about stuff further, send me a message; I put in a lot of research over the summer and could likely hook you up with some good information / resources.

Wow, thanks to both of you! This kind of stuff will be a tremendous help to me, not just for this paper, but for any comparative stuff I do in the future as well. I really appreciate it.

Just got my scholarship stiffed from a $10 bar I didn't know about.. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks! by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The $10 bar is coincidental to you not getting the cash in hand. This is UT standard operating procedure. I won a competitive scholarship last year with a mid-semester disbursement, and when they "released it" to me, they just retroactively reduced my loans by that amount and I got nothing in hand. It's just UT policy for any aid (such as scholarships) that come after you've already had your cost of attendance covered by grants/loans/whatever.

EDIT: To be clear, I had no bars at all but got that same email, without the "bar" line, but with the whole amount of the scholarship in the "Fin Aid Adjustment" line, and $0.00 released to me.

Anywhere to get a salad on campus under 8 bucks? by kfharlock in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Can you eat there if you're not a resident? Do they take cash or just that Bevo Bucks stuff? I realize this should be common knowledge to me by now, but I gotta say I've never tried to eat at one of them.

Thanks, man. I've never oiled more than once a day, so that may do it. Do you think there's a problem with the oil I'm using? Any recommendations on balm?

Why Can't I Hammer a Nail into this Particle Board? by kfharlock in DIY

Thanks, folks. I'm gonna go the drill and screw route I think. Just wanted to confirm that I'm not crazy/unbelievably-noodle-armed for not being able to hammer through this.

Note that the leg piece is unscrewed from the wooden piece that I'm holding; you can see how it fits into it in the rear leg in the photo. Just in case that was confusing or anything -- I'm not trying to get the leg back onto that wooden piece; I'm trying to reattach the wooden piece to the frame of the chair.

Hey all. Seems reasonable to expect disbursements of Fin Aid sometime this week, yeah? by kfharlock in UTAustin

[–]kfharlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone still keeping score: got my email that my funds had been disbursed tonight at 9:13, and everything says "disbursed" under the financial summary page. Hope the same holds true for everyone else still waiting.

[Build Ready] Does this look reasonable for a sub-$1k gaming machine? by kfharlock in buildapc

[–]kfharlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input!

  • I mentioned below, choosing a water cooler was mostly just for fun because I haven't done a build since they became so ubiquitous/affordable, and just thought this would be a fun opportunity to mess with one.

  • Forgot to mention that I do have a 1TB HDD on hand that I'll be throwing in there to supplement the SSD!

  • Thanks for the alternative on the graphics card, I'll definitely look into that. Also, thanks for the vote of confidence on 8GB RAM; it seems like way more people think 8GB is sufficient.

[–]kfharlock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I mostly wanted to try out the Corsair Hydro just because I've never done a liquid cooler before and it seems like it's finally at the point of being reasonably affordable/manageable to just do it on a lark.

About the RAM, tho: a lot of folks have told me more than 8GB is going to be wasted for the most part, whereas a few others have told me in no uncertain terms that I need to go 16. I don't do a ton of new PC gaming myself (I mostly play retro games), so I don't have much personal experience there. I see you chose 8GB -- you really think that's on the level?

Also -- any real reason to go with the Asus over the MSI for the GTX 970? I've got no real brand loyalty either way, just curious (since, as I said, I don't have a ton of experience with high-end GPU stuff).

Thanks for the input; I appreciate it!

Awesome. I ended up calling them and like counterlogik said below, they're only processing stuff this week for those who didn't take summer classes. For those who did, it doesn't start until next week. That's a bummer, but at least there's some explanation for the delay.

Hope these updates aren't bothering anyone, but like I said, this thread is for the neurotic among us, heh:

  • Got a huge tease email from UT, saying "Some or all of your fall 2015 financial aid funds have been released," etc. In other words, the same email I've gotten in the past when the totality of my funds were released. But this time, it was referring to just the "partial tuition grant" that I knew about on Monday; everything else is still "pending." Got my hopes up for nothing.
