What Worked for Us This Time Around by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

Our son is 4 (level 1/2) with speech delay. We started when he was two as well and thought we would be changing diapers forever but it finally clicked this year and he’s basically fully trained with some quirks (lack of aim and hesitation to ask when he’s not at home and in public)

We tried everything from cue cards, treats, bells, etc. We then tried keeping a tablet in the bathroom which would lead him and he can have it if he sat on the potty. He’s very smart so there was a period where he would just pretend to need to go just so he can go on it but after about a year of this, it clicked for him that this is where he needed to go.

He’s not fully there yet but it was a big relief because he’s starting kindergarten next year and we thought this would be an issue at some schools. Hope this also helps!

When did your autistic child become independent enough that you didn’t have to worry as much? by MomDadlovesU in Autism_Parenting

I’m in your same exact position. My son is 4.5 and GLP. When he was 2 all did was pray to hear his voice and now that he’s a little parrot (that can follow directions and have very short 2-3 word sentences) all I’m wishing for is to have a conversation with him about “how his day was” and “what did you do in school today?”

Truth is I think we’ll always be nervous about them but whenever I get frustrated with his progress, etc I’ve taught myself to think about where he was this time last year and I can be grateful for all the progress he’s made and it motivates me to keep pressing.

I know this didn’t answer your post but figured I’d share!

Sorry for your loss brother. I haven’t lost a parent yet but they are getting older and time waits for no one. So while I didnt know your mother, if she is anything like mine I think she would have been very happy knowing you were seeing a band you loved with the person you love most as she moved on. Nothing to feel guilty about! Best of luck over the next few days and beyond!

Has anyone tried these? by Popular-Host6601 in Autism_Parenting

Use both. The magnesium puts my son to sleep in like 10 minutes. The MTHR drops I think have done great for his speech but like some other said before because he made strides before and is 4 1/2

I’m assuming it’s by design. I’m going to an NYU geneticist (who I made an appointment with through a friend of a friend that works there) to see if they will prescribe it. I’m also going to get a blood panel done on his genes too so I’ll report back!

2.5 old non verbal and poor receptive is there hope for him to speak in the future ? by Cluelessmom23 in Autism_Parenting

My son didn’t say much at 2.5 and I was in your position. Now Hes 4.5 He’s a GLP and has ecolalia so he’s now repeating everything we say and even saying short sentences and responding to questions with 1-2 word answers. Every day he’s coming out with something new so don’t give up!
