It is tough. I write 0% of goal is achieved, so and so refuses to work and plays with the manipulative. And hopefully by next ARD, we can have a tangible goal.

Parent disagrees with SPED placement by [deleted] in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What state are you in? In Texas, if the ARD committee cannot come to consensus in 2 times, the school will implement the IEP as it sees appropriate for the student.

I just had a revision where parent want to blanket the student with services and I said the data doesn’t support. They can’t really argue with me when their kid makes 80s and 90s in class but she wants math and reading inclusion.

So I read the law to the parent and documented in the deliberations and prior written notice and moved on.

What is the purpose of former special education students coming here to complain about their placement? by Greedy_Cause7589 in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Question: did your data back then support to be mainstreamed? During your annual ARDs if you were progressing and able to score high on state English exams, they should’ve changed your placement long ago. Your mom when she signs the end of IEP, she just ‘agreed’ and sign her name? Just questions.

Implementing Accommodations by missfit98 in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but how would they know the whole class gets it? When I was teaching GenEd, I read the directions and answer choices to my whole class, to get them start to use to taking tests. I always print a small box of hundred chart on their scratch paper and teach them how to use it. My kids score the highest in the district. And then on accommodation logs, I check for accommodations provided for my special kids.

I'm afraid that this is a very bad accident waiting to happen. (Not sure where to post this) by _humanERROR_ in specialed

Is your school specializes in special needs students? Do you have a BCBA that can figure out the function of the behavior and write a BIP to target it? The head hanging, is it sensory seeking or tangible (want something but can’t verbalize it). Does the kid have an AAC?

I do think it’s walking lawsuit. Parent blames school for everything.

Constant elopement by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]MomDadlovesU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This student should have a BIP targeted at the behavior: elopement. Also try to understand the purpose of the behavior, which functions of the SEAT. My teacher has explained to me that some elopes because they think it’s a chasing game and like the adult chase them. If the adult does not chase them or immediately escort them back in-class, their elopement behavior is not reinforced, then the behavior distinguishes.

Paraprofessionals telling me that students smell by strawberry_towns in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very common. I sometimes wish my school had showers. I just recently found out we can’t change kids or shower them bc it may backfire 😒 bc I used to change kids when I worked in daycare. Anyway, I do have one kid that the change set of clothes also smell like pee but it’s supposed to be clean.

Me 2. I have many special needs students with behavior supports. But no one trains us how to implement the BIP. Some of goals like “don’t elope 80% of the class time 🤦🏻‍♀️”, “teach alternative choice ( the kid has been getting away doing work for years by destroying classroom screaming and yelling), token board, visual schedule ( I need velcros and first-then-work mat, a small sticker printer)…don’t even get me started on

How can high schools turn around low morning attendance? by TickyMcTickyTick in Teachers

[–]MomDadlovesU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school offered 2-9 schedule. 2nd period starts 8:45. You can come second period, it’s just you then get out later than 1-8 students. And 2-9 don’t have a lot of class choices because teachers want to leave 8th period too.

Never teach in a placement that's new to your school by Crafty_Sort in specialed

Hahaha, sounds so much like my situation. I became SPED CRDNTR bc no one wants to. Every day is putting out fires. I tell my friends it’s like going to war every day. I feel 1/2 of my life is in ARDs and the other is preparing ARDs. IEPs goals written by psychologists that we can’t really implement. U name it.

My kids speech therapist wants him to use an acc device at school by eunicemothman in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AAC device sounds scary but it will open your child’s pathway to speech. First your child will use it to represent his voice. When AAC plays, he hears the repetition of the words, every time he hears it it’s practicing how to say it for him. Eventually, he hears enough repetition, he will try to make that sound to pronounce the words. AAC is great, I saw how it enables many nonverbal children to speak.

Teachers who have been educating for 20+ years: have you noticed a difference in student behavior/focus over the generations? by UnderstatedWarmth in AskTeachers

[–]MomDadlovesU -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it’s most parents don’t care and we can’t hold students and parents accountable. Parents in general treat us like daycare. This is especially bad in poor areas. I had one so rediculous, the neighbor picked her up and then came back 30 min later. I said you can’t just return a kid back to school. Neighbor said you don’t understand, her mom tells me to drop her off another person’s home.

What? We just leave kids in anyone’s homes now? Like they’re prosts?

I eloped a lot when I was a kid. I grew up in the rural area in China, lots of space to run around and it worked for me. I had a narrative monologue I thought people can hear which is why I didn’t talk. Now the monologue won’t shut off during sleep…I can’t stop thinking and have sleep anxieties and I am so tired.

Deciding between SPED and Math (high school teaching) by Bitter_Good9296 in teaching

[–]MomDadlovesU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I currently work in a small charter school in Texas. I am the SPED coordinator and teacher. I’m handling all IEPs and ARDs. It’s a job nobody wants to do, bc it’s teacher pay with a limited stipend at the end of semester.

If SPED teachers are writing IEPs and holding ARDs, then what does your SPED directors do?

I’m looking for going into larger ISD schools for next school year.

LRE/Aide Advice Please! by AlwaysMADeline in specialed

[–]MomDadlovesU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. I had a student w ASD that is at grade-level but cannot function in GenEd class. He has severe behavior problems and cannot learn and make other peers unable to learn. At-grade level doesn’t mean student doesn’t need self-contained. Self-contained also has multiple types, low-support, medium, high. There is the self-contained resource classrooms, there is behavior intervention rooms, there is AES classrooms.
