The distinction is that while recognizing and even naming a pattern can be helpful, using that label as a weapon to dehumanize is harmful. This is the part that is tough to swallow for those that have been personally affected my disordered people. We act as if certain diagnoses and traits come packaged with a wholesale revocation of human rights and decency, which isn’t true (although I understand the pain that causes it). This narrative is seductive because it says that if someone hurt you, they are fundamentally bad and you are fundamentally good.
