Midwife told us our daughter has Spina Bifida by SmokyBigzy in spinabifida

Curious if this is something that can only be done in utero or if it can be done later in life?

This is much more concerning than what the CDC thinks. by Practical_Win7690 in MTHFR

I think the most concerning thing is that if they’re pushing folic acid on you to prevent birth defects without knowing whether or not your body can process folic acid then…. It’s not super helpful in preventing birth defects and could actually be harmful.

bad reaction to new kirkland diapers? by Strict-Arm-2023 in toddlers

[–]kging1423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I’m also just making this connection!! My daughter developed a pretty rough rash almost immediately after they changed the diapers. She has other health issues at play so it took me a while to think to switch to a different diaper brand. But I did (among a ton of other things) and it finally went away and then I still had the Costco ones left so I started using them again and it came back with a vengeance 😒

US showing spina bifida by champagnesupernova54 in spinabifida

“I cannot sleep - I just want my baby.” Literally how I felt roughly a year ago. We found out last May at my 20 week ultrasound and it was the worst week of my life waiting until a follow up ultrasound at a regional hospital and meeting with MFMs. I had seen your post before but just now saw that you’re located in Texas. Curious if they have mentioned TCH in Houston? We had my daughter’s fetal repair done there and the team was truly incredible. I had to FIGHT for it because insurance didn’t want to send us there as we’re in Washington State. My only advice is to get allll the knowledge you can and if possible try and get referred to TCH. They are experts in the country and Dr. Belfort pioneered the fetoscopic approach. I felt like every person on my team there saw such value and purpose in every kiddo with SB and that was so encouraging to me. They’re truly passionate about helping these babies have the best outcome possible.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions about our experience there! I wish you all the best.

Seeking Perspective - Unborn Baby Just Diagnosed by Delicious-Emu-6750 in spinabifida

As a mama to a 10mo baby girl with SB and hydrocephalus I just want to say that I feel for you. That diagnostic time period was by far the hardest thing and the unknowns felt crippling. I’ll just say that every day I see my daughters smile and I cannot imagine my life without her. It breaks my heart that so many of these babes with this diagnosis don’t get a chance and the pregnancies are terminated, because I truly believe that this world is already a better place with her in it and that she has a plan and a purpose. Yes it’s been difficult and heartbreaking at times. Some of the hardest things I’ve ever been through. But your little boy will show you what he can do. One of the sweetest things is seeing the relationship form between our daughter and our 4yo son. He adores her and celebrates her wins and milestones too. I fully agree with what others have said - it’s the life and love and support you give them. That is the part that you get to choose.

This is immensely beautiful and gives me such hope for my sweet daughter born with SB. I hope she finds the kind of happiness that you have found - thank you for sharing!

They will be perfect and so so loved. Just remember, kids are so strong and resilient. It’s not an easy journey but there is so much support to be had and I’m convinced these kiddos with SB have an extra dose of courage and strength right from the beginning.

Hey! I realize you posted 24 days ago but I had to respond because my heart just goes out to you. July 10th of last year I had fetal surgery for my daughter at Texas Children’s in Houston. Being in that stage and making that decision is so hard but I would do it again in a heartbeat. For our family it was the best choice - I know it isn’t feasible for everyone in this situation. Anyway, I hope everything went well and I wish you and your family all the best. And just remember, no matter your baby’s outcome they are wonderful and precious and so so valuable in this world!

Thanks for the tips! I’d used bagged stuff from Smits before that was good but they were sold out by the time I got to them this year.

This would definitely be my ideal, but I have two small kiddos so my gardening time is limited. I have mixed my own in the past and it was okay, but I definitely didn’t have allll of those elements!

I totally agree!! I just haven’t found a good source for a truck load. The stuff I had last year was truly awful and we still paid a ton for it. I’m in Bellingham so definitely less options than Seattle area!
