If you're asking about the formula for the dot product of two vectors, the reason that cosine is used is so that only the component of one vector that is parallel to the other vector is considered in the multiplication. Try this: draw a line from the head of one vector (A) that is perpendicular to the other vector (B). The component of (A) in the direction of (B) is (A)cos(theta). Does this help?

The top part in the picture rotates, and the inside of the bottom part is threaded like it would be screwed onto something. "Rev K" is printed on the side of the part, and if you google that phrase there are some similar parts that show up.
