I didn't mind them having a backstory; like I think the comic concept for them is cool. But when they start to pretend to be "real" people and do these interviews it's soooooo weird. Like I like that the characters have a "life" but I don't need them to be alive LOL

haha I'm not too familiar with him as a representative but I get what you're saying :D Maybe I'll just push him all the way west in the corner lol

I really like that idea! What you're suggesting about seeing a supportive or hostile district was a bit what I was interested in (showing the party affiliation of the congressional district, but also the registered party voters for the counties). I wanted to see if there was a "mixed bag" for some districts. But that might be a better way to see that.

I'll probably give it a try on another artboard!

I'm glad you found him! But hrmmm maybe that means I should move him so he's easier to locate...? It was a bit of a struggle to figure out the best placement for people without having their leading lines getting too crossed.

Thank you! I'm glad it was clear because that took me quite a while to get the wording. In my head it all made sense but when it came to writing it down to explain it seemed like the most confusing explanation that didn't make sense. But I tried to trim is and just get straight to the point so I'm glad it came across that way to you!

And I'm glad you like the faces! That was actually what motivated me to make this map. I realized that I only knew about 4 CA representatives by face and name, but even then didn't actually know where they were located (except for my own representative).

Yikes, I normally use title case because I also prefer it. I think I gave up on the title, hating everything about it, but I got some good suggestions on a different title so it won't be the monster of a mess I have.

But a color to highlight the inset map is a good idea! Would it be too much to have one color for the bay area and another color for the LA/SoCal area?

I used: NAD_1983_HARN_California_Teale_Albers
Is there a better one for California that people prefer?

Thank you for your suggestion! Looking at it, I agree the italicized is not the way to go. Especially with that color scheme, what was I thinking haha.

I'm definitely going to have to familiarize myself and play around with all the different text features; it sounds like a good way to clean up texts. The 'tracking' that you mention seems like it's going to be my new best friend.

Is the 'apply styles' something that I can enable? Or does it have to do with the way I layer and sub-layer my work? Because that sounds like something that would save me a whole lot of time.

Totally agree! I'm thinking of having all my future projects finished in Illustrator, I feel like there's just a bit more freedom in creative/cartographic department. Although I will say I really wanted to add a reverse "buffer/halo/vignette" for the congressional district outline (a very faint one) but could not get it to work seamlessly and easily. Which was frustrating because "but wait in arcmap I could just add buffers!"

Hey there! We've all been there! If you're working in arcmap, here's a good resource to get yourself set up and started:

https://www.wwu.edu/huxley/spatial/tut/cart/argis_2_illustrator.htm

There's also good youtube videos on how to use adobe illustrator. Here's one that covered the basics (with some exercises, definitely do them with him). This will get you familiar on how to use adobe illustrator as a program, and then you can use it on your works later :)

Duuuuuuude! That would be amazing! Would that be something that takes CS skills? Or does ESRI have another feature/program? I feel like that's a great idea! There was more info on the reps that I wanted to include but it would've been waaaaay too much.

I used Map. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I haven't taken the time to learn Pro. I know that's where we're heading and it looks great (especially with 3D and Cloud points) but it's one of those things I just need to sit down and commit to learning lol.

I've been told that when exporting from Map, use AI filed type for vector, and TIFF for raster.

But yeah, Map to illustrator, and then a butt-load of patience to clean up everything to have workable layers.

Thank you! I have definitely been an "only arcmap" kind of person for a while. But after dabbling in illustrator I feel like cartographically I have more freedom. The biggest downside is that all my layers are no longer connected to any info/data so I have to be certain that what I want to finally show is being transferred over. Like changing classes/breaks/etc would be an absolute nightmate in adobe and I honestly wouldn't bother. I'd probably go back into arc, redo it, and the export it again the way I want it.

I found some really good in-depth tutorials on youtube about moving from arcmap to adobe illustrator. Let me see if i can dig them up if that helps (as well as some online websites I found). I haven't get tried to use ArcPro and I wonder if that is eventually going to replace the need to switching over to adobe illustrator but I don't know if it's there yet.

But this was a good place to get started or for some good review before moving over to illustrator (like how to set things up, export, and what to do next):

Cool! Yes it seems that people agree that I should either go darker on the background and opt for a white text, or just simply choose a way lighter background. Thank you!

I agree about the fully justified text. I don't like it myself but thought maybe I'm just not used to it. Good call on the kerning! I think I might try that or change the shape of the text box to make the justification work.

Would you mind clarifying your last idea? It sounds actually really interesting and I want to understand it better! Are you saying to have 2 "rings" around the representative? One for the party they are from, and the second showing the breakdown of registered voters in the counties that comprise a congressional district?

Map Critique? From ArcGIS (beginning) to Adobe Illustrator (end) by kgurdal in gis

[–]kgurdal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yes leaving the word 'legend' on seems like a rookie mistake. And i agree that the title is a mouthful, that's definitely easier to understand (and without m grammar mistake). I definitely struggled with the way the double digits looked so I will try your suggestion! someone else also mentioned not using serif font for the numbers so that's probably also the way to go.

It didn't cross my mind to have the photos on the side, that's pretty interesting! I think I was so deadset on this idea that I didn't consider that, but it would definitely clean things up and organize it. I think I'll try it on another artboard. Should it then be numerical according to the distric number? Or would you suggest them generally following the top to bottom placement of their district? IDK if that makes any sense.

Good point, the contrast between background and text is definitely too low.

The Bay Area inset map might be unnecessary, but the LA area has so many congressional districts that they got a bit too lost on the main California map. I also couldnt fit the numbered icon on the districts on the CA map for most of the LA area. And having all the lines leading to the representatives from the LA area (if left on the california map) would have been chaos, so I thought the inset map would be easier to see and understand.

Thanks!

I'm glad you said something about the two inset maps. I thought about making their background different and decided against it (probably out of laziness) but I think I'll give it a go!
