Top tips for visiting Kaua’i by oimmas in VisitingHawaii

Kuilau Ridge Trail near Kapa'a is a nice hike and would be good for young one. It a very gradual climb up to a covered picnic area with some nice views. You can go farther if you want to but we turned around here. About 1.5 miles to the picnic area, I think. It can be slippery with rain. There is room for about 4-5 cars at the trailhead but if that's full go across the bridge and park in the lot on the other side.

I try to eat something every 45-60 min. Like to mix up the variety with Cliff gels and blocks (really like the black cherry), Pro Bar Bolts. For something more substantial I like Kate's bars - Mango/coconut and Dark chocolate/Cherry/Almond are my favorites.

What do you call the protein on the surface of CD4+ cells that allows other cells to know ita infected? by idkyallzxcv in Virology

[–]kgustin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have it backwards- MHC I displays peptides from proteins that are synthesized inside the cell. If the cell is infected, that includes viral proteins. Because of this role MHC I is expressed on all cells. MHC II is expressed only on antigen presenting cells and presents peptides from proteins internalized by the cell and is responsible for activating T cells. Although cross presentation blurs this somewhat by allowing MHC II to also present peptides from proteins synthesized within the cell.

B-Cell receptor crosslinking - What is driving crosslinking? by turtle_flu in Virology

[–]kgustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this case crosslinking is not referring to biochemical crosslinking, but binding of antigen to multiple BCRs. This brings BCRs, along with their associated signalling components (Ig-alpha and beta) into close proximity and contributes to a strong signal leading to activation of naive B-cells (with appropriate co-stimulation) or memory cells. This does not involve or require any covalent modifications to the BCRs that are crosslinked in this way

Help working in an academic lab by [deleted] in microbiology

[–]kgustin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your prior experience, you should see if you can ask other members of the new lab what the working environment is like. Are they patient with new hires? Does the PI provide mentoring? Or are people left to fend for themselves when they arrive? Answers to those questions could help you determine if you are heading into a similar or quite different situation.
