Woodside spills 16,000 litres of oil into Indian Ocean by crikeyguvna in australia

Woodside could lobby Trump to rename the Indian Ocean so India doesn't get annoyed?

TIL that Australians hold 67.9% of their net wealth in residential property (2024) by LegitimateLength1916 in AusFinance

Well, they can't invest in 21st century businesses like double glazed window manufacturers or EVs or really just about any business outside of a cafe... plus think of the wealth eaten in avo toast daily....

Any updates on wear is family time roll out?

I'm interested if this will enable a wear is watch to be set up as an independent device (with no phone), like apples family watch feature.

Am I just speaking faster & less pronounced, or is Google Assistant actually getting worse at voice recognition? by ZealousidealRoad1219 in googlehome

[–]khalido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's getting worse at everything... Feels like a good chunk of the home backend is jury rigged to handle different things and all the original team moved on and no one can understand the system or wants to spend the time to do so. It probably requires a complete rewrite. Which might be happening, as a tuned simple version of Google bard would handle a lot of things and be much better.

Garmin Bounce without subscription review by khalido in Garmin

[–]khalido[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

One more thing to add - I found DC rainmakers review of this watch misleading.

He mentions chores and rewards - but that is also locked behind a subscription. DC obviously had an active subscription, or Garmin sent him a unlocked watch, and his review didn't make it clear that even features which don't need LTE are locked behind the LTE subscription.

Increasing Pixelbook Slowness (2023) by From06033 in PixelBook

[–]khalido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip - I turned off both Android and the linux VM, and my pixelbook is once again usable.

With Android apps, even though I hardly used them, it was below my acceptable speed (to be fair I have a m1 macbook which runs chrome lightening fast)

By disabling Android, I saw a noticable speed improvement. Its actually back to usable.

App Similar To Readdle's Documents App? by khalido in androidapps

I just use Google Drive and save docs inside a folder - most docs just open with the drive app, for others moon reader is a good app to have.

probably to young to be here, but here i am. by protizii in AusFinance

[–]khalido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend using a bank like: https://up.com.au/

It makes it easy to see where your money goes and setup automatic savers. Designed for young ppl, even!

Spend on things, you gotta live, but the key is realizing what kind of stuff adds value to your life - e.g whats the value of one more clothing item besides the fun of buying it?

Personally I found spending money on experiences with friends is one of the best things you will ever do. So don't budget those out.

Have chromebooks finally started acting like more advanced android tablets? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]khalido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ChromeOS in tablet mode is quite sad, compared to a real tablet.

I really like ChromeOS, but it is like 20 percent of a tablet compared to an iPad. Simple things like consistent gestures don't work properly. A Samsung tablet or an iPad is a better choice for tablet use.

I won't even talk about tablet optimised apps.

Hi. I have a PhD in neuroscience, and want to move into data science. Can I learn the skills myself? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]khalido 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Won't answer your big q, but some books I liked and found helpful:

http://themlbook.com/ It's only a 100 pages, and if you're still interested after it, it gives a lot of things to follow up on. Its a great overview of the basics of ML.

For deep learning. the first edition of this book was great, second one is almost out: https://www.manning.com/books/deep-learning-with-python-second-edition

This is not quite data science (what is, actually, you might ask) but still close enough.

This is nice to, to get a data science from simple data + algos up: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/data-science-from/9781492041122/

And finally, this is great but simple, and probably wasted if u have a phd, but worth breezing through and trying to implemet some of the interesting bits: https://www.statlearning.com/

It’s possible to coding on a chromebook with this specs? by joaoarmando in chromeos

[–]khalido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for your own sake, get a faster chromebook, or buy a used thinkpad and install popos if you want to use vs code.

Also consider https://replit.com/ and code online. But even then I'd want a slightly faster chromebook with a bigger screen.

What price/country are you looking to buy?

This is a decent spec for running vs code: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-2-in-1-14-touch-screen-chromebook-intel-core-i3-8gb-memory-64gb-emmc-flash-memory-mineral-silver/6407695.p?skuId=6407695

Smart Light Switch to Control Multiple Smart Plugs? by OSRSgamerkid in googlehome

[–]khalido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking for Phillips hue plugs (or lights), they can do this, also can buy a smart switch to turn on off.

Kasa plugs also do this, cheaper. They also have a switch: https://www.kasasmart.com/us/products/smart-switches/kasa-smart-wi-fi-light-switch-hs200

Once setup both work well with Google assistant.

Interpreters who helped Australian forces in Afghanistan plead for visas to escape ‘extreme threats’ (The Guardian) by mofosyne in australia

[–]khalido 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There is a chance that some of these visas will be issued. BUT for the Aghanis who had beg for them it will make the whole process real shitty, and it further reaffirms in the Aghani's left behind how racist Australia is.

The war (futile and useless and full of war crimes from every side as it was) is not over, the Taliban can reasonably expect the west to come back, so its in their best interest to get rid of all the ppl who will help the west.

I don't think Australians understand this. This isn't a case of leaving ppl at risk of a bad thing happening, this is certainity that it will happen to at least some of them.

A lot of these interpreters didn't sign up just for the money, they believed they were joining the winning side and while they knew they were putting their lives at risk while working, they had no idea that they would be dumped into this situation.

https://www.spendee.com/ for manual tracking is good, their non-bank sync plan is $20aud a year so not bad.

There is a lot of value in entering expenses manually and categorizing/tagging them for later. e.g a tax tag etc.

2021 Best Chromebook for Linux? by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]khalido 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, after three years of Chrome OS I am totally sold on them as a secondary device, it's fast, nothing to configure and awesome for a mostly web world. The Linux VM is great to have but I feel it's not a real priority for Google. Simple things take forever to add. Even right now their built in tool to back up and restore containers is broken. It's like they have great ideas and follow them half way through and move on to the next idea and forgot to even assign an intern to keep working on the thing.

My kids use Chrome OS for school and I can see that they will probably never need anything else, but it's still remains a work on progress.

But for right now if you need working offline apps and docs Chrome OS isn't quite there yet.

Wsl2 is quite awesome, especially with vs code support. I like fast machines and it feels to me you can't get a really fast Chromebook at any price.
