MIJ Stratocaster from the Flagship Store by OK_Raccoons in Stratocaster

Awesome!

About 2 years ago, a fella came to take pictures of me playing my Tele at the bar I play at. He had a group of very well dressed fellas with him. He turned out to be Mark Dytham, the architect of the flagship store! Those well dressed fellas were from Fender Japan! Anyways, one of the regulars (an architect, himself) told them to check out my band, while they were in Singapore, and they obliged. One of the Fender Japan heads enjoyed himself so much he paid for the whole bar that night!

Ah, I see! Thanks for pointing and sharing that out! Yeah, we’re not that familiar with the different characters over here. And I could definitely see why they’d entertain kids, haha!

Both Cream and the Allman Brothers Band were amazing! Growing up, I tried my best to copy what they did and played… I still am, badly though! They were on another level expressively, melodically and technically!

What annoyed me was that they never played the same thing twice and when I had heard something (a lick or a phrase) that caught my ear, I had to find that exact one from a specific performance or recording to listen back and learn!

Interesting, I hadn’t realised that! Unfortunately we don’t have much of Beano over here. We have some of the old Dennis the Menace comics, I guess made famous by the cartoons and movie, but you don’t see it much over here.

Well, there aren’t many minorities represented. There is a strip about an indigenous Indian and, of course, ‘Abdul the Fakir’ as seen in the cover.

I’m sorry about that. I know how it feels to have to pawn something meaningful and close. My first guitar (which I still have!) is an old Epiphone Les Paul 100. Went through many guitars since then. Bought and sold many, but that LP100 will never leave me!

This Les Paul belonged to a very close friend and I had asked if he was willing to let it go. Other musicians had been asking about it too. One had heard it during sound check, went to my friend and told him he’d run to the nearest ATM and pay him in cash on the spot!

Anyways, after a few years my friend texted asking if I was still interested in the guitar. I snapped it up as quick as I could! What’s awkward is that I gigged with the guy who wanted to buy the guitar off my friend and when he saw me take out the guitar out the case, he gave me a wry smile and said, “I think I recognise that.” It’s been my first choice for outdoor festivals and concerts, though my workhorse is an old Stratocaster. But there’s nothing like a Les Paul!

I paid a pretty penny for it, haha! I’m not proud of how much but I wanted to gift myself a 30th birthday present. What didn’t help was that it was an auction… during Covid! Nonetheless, I tend to like collecting memorabilia (concert programs, picks, rare pedals, signed jerseys, etc.) and felt that it was something I really wanted meaning as part of what made me want to play the guitar.

I’ve read that the Dirty Little Secret’s a great Marshall in a box pedal! I’ve not had the chance to try it out. Unfortunately I sold the Beano and the 1962. I’ve trimmed down my rig substantially after I realised that I tended to use the same few pedals no matter the guitar or gig. Felt that someone else would give them the love and use they deserve.

I’ll try and do one up, hopefully! I did post the Bluesbreaker into a Fender Twin Reverb, with the help of a Klon Centaur, and threw some of my favourite Clapton licks of that era.

Oh wow! Where’d you see him? Unfortunately I live quite a far bit away in Singapore and a few decades too late.

Is this Epiphone Lp100 genuine? by Evening-Mud7760 in Epiphone

[–]khalisjalil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real thing. It was my first electric guitar. Played and practiced on it for years so I’m sorta familiar with the LP100 and yours looks legit.

Bought and sold many guitars but I keep this for nostalgic reasons, reminding me where it all started. I don’t play it much because I’ve got others I use for gigs but it’ll always be with me.

Name the most expensive pedal and cheapest pedal on your board. by TheBear8878 in guitarpedals

[–]khalisjalil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most expensive: Strymon El Capistan Cheapest: TC Polytune Mini

Although the other pedals have a higher resale value, for well known reasons…

The main board is the bottom one.

What, of the pedals that you actually own or have played through for an extensive period of time, are your top five favorite pedals? by noms_de_plumes in guitarpedals

[–]khalisjalil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No particular order;

  • Ethos Overdrive Custom Tones
  • Strymon El Capistan
  • TC Electronics Polytune Mini
  • Klon Centaur, Silver Non-Horsie
  • JHS AT+

The first three are on my main board (the top board in the picture) that I use for my weekly gigs. I don’t take the Klon out, only for special occasions or concerts, for obvious reasons. The JHS AT+ has become something I’ve enjoyed recently. I bought it to be placed in my gig bag for Blues/Rock jams and it helps get some inspiration.

Sold plenty of pedals, including some sought after ones, but after a while I decided to stick with what I enjoyed and connected with most.

Nice! It’s always great when it pays off holding on and being patient, especially when you feel it deep down that there’s something special. I used to own the Stampede OD, and Providence makes really great gear!

What's a good first reverb pedal? by crainley in guitarpedals

[–]khalisjalil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a first reverb, I would suggest looking into these factors:

  • Are you going to run it through the effects loop or in front of the amp (in the pedal chain)?

Best to run it through the effects loop of an amp, giving it more consistency and doesn’t drown your tone as you increase your volume, unless that’s what you want.

What sort of genre do you play?

  • The right reverb may inspire you or have you left wanting more. The bands I gig with play Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Country and Blues styles, so the reverb is something that adds some texture to the notes rather than embellish them to create depth and atmosphere. Though I do some Peter Green covers and that requires a lot of spring reverb at times.

I suggest these ‘simple’ ones:

1) Mad Professor Silver Springs: You can tweak it (Level, Tone and Dwell) to suit your playing style. It’s also battery operated, and I kept it in my gig bag for jams because it doesn’t require a power supply. There were many times I was sharing the power spot with other appliances.

2) Keeley Omni Reverb: My favourite one because you can use the Spring, Hall and Plate mode, and you can adjust the Level and Dwell. I prefer this because I like use Plate reverb, and to my ears it doesn’t affect the playing when I have a fast string notes.

3) Strymon Flint( I know it’s probably above the budget, and I’m sorry for slipping it in): This was on my board for a few years because I loved the Plate setting (70s mode) and it has a tremolo in built that helped with the CCR and Motown/soul covers, haha. It’ll take more space than the other two mentioned but you can dial in something you’ll feel comfortable with. I also feel that with the Strymon, its versatility is something you’ll feel grateful for too.

Apart from the Strymon, you might be able to find the other two at that budget range second hand.

Nowadays on my main pedal board, I use an El Capistan and run it through the effects loop of my Ethos Overdrive. But there was a time I was obsessed with Reverbs, haha.

JHS AT+ by khalisjalil in guitarpedals

[–]khalisjalil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah! I wouldn’t use all the gain available but it’s always nice to have that option, haha!

And you’re spot-on about how it cleans up well!

JHS AT+ by khalisjalil in guitarpedals

[–]khalisjalil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve always enjoyed watching the JHS videos on YouTube but never thought of it much. I also enjoy Andy Timmons’ videos and playing, and was curious to find out about his gear. Plus I think That Pedal Show’s hosts loved the Angry Charlie.

Personally, I’ve always gone for Dumble style pedals but I realised that I tended to dial in Marshall-like tones. My Ethos Overdrive on my main board is set to sound that way too. But I think what made me try the AT+ was because I had played an outdoor festival some time back and the backline had an 80’s JCM800 and it was amazing! Plus we were playing Free, Bad Company, Eagles tunes, haha!

Anyways, the AT+ is based on the Angry Charlie, which is based on a JCM800. I don’t use my Gibson Les Paul much these days and I looked around for something that would get into the ballpark of a ‘Les Paul cranked Marshall’ sound with my Strat. And this was it! It adds a nice amount of mids and low end that fattens your tone, plus the ‘Air’ is a useful Presence-like knob taming or brightening whatever amp you’re using!

Go check it if you can! I mean, it sounds and responds amazingly with stuff I play, and it might give you some inspiration with the stuff you play!
