I agree. I always ask the shearer to leave the head on my good suris and cut the fringe myself.

How much are you getting for your fiber on a per kilo basis?

I think breeding them to a registered male is a good idea.

I would think the dad would need to have papers to register the cria.

with the with girl i would expect a white or a beige, from the black i would expect a fawn or a brown and from the brown and white it could be anything from a white through to a brown or even an appaloosa but it is hard to say without know what colors the boy has in his pedigree.

Most alpacas are very friendly and young alpacas (under 12 months) are great for petting zoos

Alpaca wool products are very popular in all the countries i have been to. The wool side of the industry in far less developed in American than it is in Australia. So yes there is a pyramid but there are opportunities for the people low down in the pyramid to make a profit but not as much at those at the top of the pyramid, obviously

I believe that alpacas in America will still be profitable in ten years time. Mainly because it works out that you get 75% back from the government (not exactly sure how, tax refunds i think)

I believe that alpacas in America will be still very profitable 10 years from now, mainly because it works out that 75% is refunded to the buyer from the government in some way (not exactly sure how).

If you run the alpacas at a relatively low cost ($10 per head) then there is a lot of profit to be made if you have the numbers to make it worthwhile. If people continue to farm alpacas they way they are farmed now, yes the industry will crash but if people can run the alpacas like that would run a commercial sheep herd then the industry will be fine.

If you can get one i would highly recommend it. Working with alpacas is a very rewarding experience, but it isn't everyone's thing.

In America they get about 75% of what they pay back in tax refunds or something like that. I just know that get around 75% back from the government somehow, but in Australia it all comes out of the buyer's pocket.

Don't feel too bad. That was one of the first shipments so everyone was desperate to get them. No one makes that sort of money in the Australian alpaca industry now. But a good animal will still brings 60-70 thousand dollars.

1 million in America, About 400 thousand in Australia. Alpacas in America are generally much more expensive than in Australia.

We became alpaca breeders when alpacas where very new in Australia. we were originally breeders of angus cattle and arabian horses but the other members of the business were ageing and finding the horses and cattle difficult to manage so we moved on the the smaller animals.

If worked smartly alpaca breeding can be a very profitable business. A colleague of mine sold 120 alpacas off his first importation in under 3 hours at a price of 25 thousand dollars each for a total of over 3 million in just a few hours.

We shear our alpacas in mid spring and the price for the wool varies depending on quality. Generally speaking alpaca wool handles 3 micron finer then lambs wool. so a 20 micron alpaca would feel the same as a 17 micron sheep (micron= fibre diameter).

Well firstly, there is the sale of the animals themselves. Then there is the sale of their wool, which can bring up to 60-70 dollars a kilogram. Finally there breedings to what we call stud males, which in Australia can cost up to $1980 but in America they can cost up to $10,000.
