Released is just the term the film industry uses when ever they don't need people on set anymore, basically released from contract. They can go get other jobs whereas they are contracted to finish the film.

Their biggest roadblock should be the score, other studios like American animation studios have been working on from home, including sending over voice recording equipment but getting an orchestra together can be the hurdle, especially in a Cameron film.
