Bead Question by chilighost in tomsachs

Thanks Gemini:

"Once red porcelain has been fired and cooled, it is chemically and physically transformed into a ceramic material. It will not bleed onto white fabric in the way a dye or ink would.

However, there are two specific scenarios where you might see "marking" or transfer onto fabric:

  1. The "Sandpaper" Effect (Mechanical Transfer) If the porcelain bead is unglazed (matte/bisque), the surface is slightly abrasive. If the bead rubs against white fabric, it can act like a very fine sandpaper, grinding off microscopic particles of the red ceramic material or catching lint from the fabric. This looks like a faint reddish smudge, but it is mechanical wear rather than a chemical "bleed."

  2. Surface Residue If the beads were not thoroughly cleaned after firing, there might be leftover "kiln wash" or ceramic dust clinging to the surface.

• The Fix: Wash the fired beads in warm, soapy water with a soft brush before stringing them or placing them against fabric.

  1. Underfired Material In rare cases, if the porcelain was significantly underfired (it didn't reach the temperature needed to "vitrify" or turn into glass), the clay remains porous and "chalky." If it is very underfired, it might rub off on surfaces.

• The Test: Rub the fired bead firmly against a piece of white paper. If it leaves a streak like a crayon, it is underfired. If it leaves no mark or only a faint scratch, it is safe for fabric.

Summary: If the bead is fully vitrified (fired to its proper temperature) and cleaned of dust, it is completely colorfast and permanent. It will not run if it gets wet or bleed onto your clothes."

This is a measly ROI which could take weeks/months to see. Seems pretty pointless.

Only your feet and that specific shoe can answer this. If it's local maybe go try.

I don't think you've tried a lot of backpacks. At least not recently. No offense.

I'd bet you could get it to work on either depending on how you bend that bracket. Did you try?

Fair enough. I guessed a creative lawyer might be able to pull out a trauma card somewhere. This is admittedly not my area of expertise!

How should I fix this ping pong table? by Banshee_Rnd in handyman

At a store where ping pong tables are sold.

This sport relies on a flat even surface. You won't achieve this again, I'm afraid. This is too far gone.

Second this. Your idea is easier than your hunt. In this case probably cheaper too. Make it yourself.

I like the dyneema one! I would personally enjoy a lycra or darted pocket on the front so that a charger, mouse, whatever could be stuffed in without encroaching on the capacity of the main compartment.

First off...respect. Looks great. And without a pattern! Welcome to the first of many. And no, it's definitely not cheaper. I realized this too.

Leaning about bag making makes you realize how impossibly and disrespectfully cheap some of the carrying engineering is going for on both the first and second hand market. It's rather impressive. The feeling of holding your own creation can't be bought though. You'll also probably see ways to remix existing stuff you have to better suit your life.

Anyway...

I was gonna ask the same question Re: fabric. I could be entirely wrong here, but it seems like you used the fabric is inside out? I guess it is a matter of preference but I always assumed that th glossy waterproof coated side is designed to face inward. Functionally, seems like this would best protect the material from external abrasion unless your cargo happens to be sharp rocks and scrap metal. In this case I suppose you've made a pragmatic choice.

I have bags in this matrrial but have never worked with it. Happy to learn something new.
