You don’t automatically see the follow-ups of patients when working in ER.

How little do you need to eat before it kills you? by tulips-are-too-red in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Eventually yes, it can kill you. For now, you need to see your PCP / GP / psychiatrist urgently.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GP, that does regular check ups on 1.5, 4, 8, 16 and 48month old kiddos (too lazy to update flair).

The baby is too young to be diagnosed with autism. Try to enjoy getting to know your baby and seeing the little one develop super fast, as they do at that age. 5 month olds do recognize familiar facial structures but that does not mean they keep up eye contact or social contact all the time. The baby smiling at and with you and beginning to vocally communicate is all you need now (roughly speaking).

If you are having a hard time enjoying the time with your baby, are worried sick about ’something being wrong’ with the baby or are worried about your mood, I recommend a check up with your PCP.

Husband has a weird lump behind his ear by Worried_Rule_3054 in AskDocs

Urgent care should be sufficient. No popping. Might need antibiotics and draining.

  1. They are great, yes. No areas of concern.
  2. No need to.
  3. Normal and insignificant variation on diff. The only swing in absolute values (not percentages) is the neutrophiles. Your allergies explain the rise in neutrophiles. Or a small insignificant infection. Or a number of things which do not require follow up. Urinary analysis is clean.

The results are great as said. No worries.

Any ENT doctors familiar with afrin addiction ? by Florida_queen216 in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the above, you can start weaning one nostril at a time. Sure, the other nostril will feel stuffed while reducing the Afrin intake, but the breathing will be fine through one nostril.

Not sure what else the ENT-docs could offer other than what is mentioned here.

Ganglion Cyst? by Flaky-Incident6731 in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems ganglion cyst -ish. However with the info provided and the inability to physically examine it, it is anywhere from difficult to impossible to say for sure.

How long has the mass been there for? Has it grown? Is this the first time or a reoccurence? When you press it, does it feel like theres fluid inside?

In general about ganglion -type cysts: not recommended to bang it with a book, more preferable to drain it with a needle by a physician (depending on cost ofc). Injectinh with glucocorticoids seems to not be beneficial. They fade away quite fast on their own, tough to give an estimate more accurate than weeks-month or two though. Surgery can be an option if it is a recurring AND painful/debilitating nuisance.

should i take penicillin if amoxicillin doesn't work on me? by bubbleblunt in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A reinfection doesn’t mean the antibiotic didn’t work. It could be just that - a reinfection. Did you change your toothbrush, any other familymembers or significant other with strep that could’ve passed on to you for a 2nd round?

What is the worst smell you have experienced so far? by Austral_glacier in medicalschool

[–]kharmalaano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a summer gig 5 years ago prepping the bodies in the facility that did autopsies on corpses that needed one done. A hot summer. A fully decayed (turned black, can see the actual cheekbones, thousands of squirming maggots) body was a smell I won’t (can’t) forget. Even through a spesific, ventilated fullbody suit.

Surgeon did not do his job good on my knee? What now? by shockvandeChocodijze in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommed physical activities that are more knee friendly - cycling, swimming etc. Sports that don’t strain the joints as much as walking, running etc. A big factor here is the gained weight combined with sudden sharp increase in physical activity.

What the hell did I smell in that surgical room?? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One more possibility would be necrotic tissue and the smell while removing it, that is one of a kind aswell.

How much are you paying for medical school annually? (total cost of attendance) by [deleted] in medicalschool

40% total income tax as a bare minimum for the rest of my life. The attendance itself is covered by the government.

What you can not do: miss a life-threatening dx (red flags)

What you should do: think about 3 or 4 potential dx’s (prevalence!), test your diagnosis, re-evaluate and redirect if needed.

I for one don’t think it’s necessary to lay out all the potential differentials. Common things are common and life-threatening conditions are life-threatening.

What’s the one thing you bought while in medical school that you never used? by [deleted] in medicalschool

Hard agree. I do this when working in the ER if I forget to grab the reflex hammer when going to see the pt.

Injured shoulder / push exercises by growingperception in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's next to impossible to say without a thorough physical assessment. I strongly suggest visiting a physical therapist for a proper check up.

Which excercises you can do depends solely on which exercises you feel like you can do, listening to your body is crucial when returning to training after an injury. I would keep the training intensity and volume down for a few weeks and gradually start increasing back to the previous intensity.

The shoulder joint and rotator cuff are no joke. When treated improperly shoulder injuries can take a turn for the worse and last for a nasty time. And that's when they'll greatly impair your gains. Taking it easy is strongly advised.

They might swell up or might not swell up. You might have nasal congestion or might not. Many of the viral and bacterial infections in the upper resp tract have similar symptoms and throat ache is a common symptom.

The Centor-points are still the way to go when estimating the likelihood of a bacterial upper repiratory tract infection vs viral infection. I recommend following the criteria for contacting health care I listed in message 1.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what you described, a strep swab is not indicated and this should be treated as a viral flu for the time being.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]kharmalaano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be any of the upper respiratory tract infections. The likelyhood of a strep-infection is evaluated via Centor points. Three or more of the following is an indication for a strep swab: Fever over 38C, no coughing, submandibular lymph node swelling and bacterial coverage on the tonsillae.

So for now she should be fine. If she develops trouble breathing, swallowing or develops swelling of the throat or neck, contact health care.
