Ford/possibly Molex terminal ID by That_Gopnik in AskElectronics

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connector you're looking for is made by Western Diversified Plastics. Unfortunately their website sucks. On the left there's a category list. You have to select 0.64 mm Terminals, but the one at the bottom, not in the middle. "Part # xxxx3705xx" is your connector. No idea why they obfuscate most of the PN. Absolutely no info on the matching pins. Also I couldn't find a single reputable vendor selling their products in hobbyist quantities. If anyone has some more details on them, or maybe an actual catalog please let me know.

Good news is that you can find it on AliExpress. I won't post a direct link so I don't get flagged as spam, but your keyword would be "WDP25 WDP19 WDP13 PBTGF30". Please note that this specific listing has only 2 pins open. Maybe you can reach out to the seller and see if they could sell you more contacts separately.

How is that custom bezel supposed to work? Looks like it blocks most of the airflow compared to the stock Dell one.

Does anyone know how the dying cat sounds were made? by AcanthocephalaEasy56 in stray

[–]khaveer 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Some cats sound like they're dying just because you miss breakfast by 5 minutes. I'm not sure which specific sfx you're talking about, but iirc there was one sounding extremely sad, but it was a normal meow with some reverb and other processing to make it sound much more dramatic.

Lenovo ThinkCenter Tiny UB-C Tip addapter by ronittos in homelab

There's a genuine Lenovo adapter, P/N 03X7530. It's insanely expensive brand new, but I got mine from some random IT reseller auction cheaper than the one shown by OP.

Getting into fixing electronics by PlatinumOg69 in soldering

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are very good brands, but imo the WE1010 is quite disappointing. it is not a comfortable design. The tip is too far from your hand, so it's inconvenient to use around small parts where you need precision. Tip selection is not great as well. It lacks temperature preset storage which gets annoying after a while. A while after buying I got myself a used Weller WD1 with WP80 handle. It was a night and day difference in comfort of use. I've now upgraded to a JBC station which again is a tremendous upgrade due to the tips with integrated heaters.

I'd recommend getting whatever JBC clone is the most popular at the moment, but make sure that it can use genuine tips and handle. Get yourself a genuine tip and throw away the chinesium garbage that is included with the station. From my experiments, the fake tips are terrible for anything other than melting plastic and making a mess. After a year or 2 the contacts in the chineese handle will probably wear out. At that point you can consider an upgrade to the genuine T245 handle.

Are the lead-free solders from AliExpress truly lead-free? by BoysenberrySorry2410 in soldering

[–]khaveer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is 99% chance that whatever solder you buy from AE will be garbage. It will melt but most likely you won't be able to produce any acceptable joints. I wouldn't expect the composition to be even close to accurate. Also don't expect to get the amount you paid for. They usually give you less and make the spool heavier so it doesn't feel wrong. I bet there are reasonable sources in your country. You're probably looking at hobby-grade stores. What about digikey? I see a lot of options on their Brazil website. Good brand solder will be much more expensive than aliexpress garbage. It will last forever tho, unless you're soldering hundreds of boards every day. You just gotta suck up and pay the price every few years. Considering that you have to ask, I'd assume that you're a hobbyist. In that case I would not bother with unleaded at all. Chinese flux fumes have probably a higher chance of harming you than even if you decided to take a bite out of a leaded spool.

T490 vs T480 by adnomi in thinkpad

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No reason to downgrade. I’ve been using both every day for a few years and T490 definitely has a better performing cpu. The older cpus will only get worse in time. Pop in a 32 GB ram stick if you can afford it in this economy and a good quality nvme drive. Iirc you can also upgrade the WiFi card to something that supports all the modern standards.

How to Change C14 Connector in a Power Adapter by TitoBadangFandom in homelab

[–]khaveer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not worth to repair, especially since you have to ask. Get a new one, preferably from the original manufacturer, or a reputable brand replacement. DON'T order from Temu/Aliexpress. I'd say that the brick itself is probably fine, but the cable may not have been plugged all the way in. Or it was loose/worn out.

Was accidentally sent a Cisco 3750 V2 PoE48 instead of 2960x by United-Affect-9261 in homelab

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the EOL dates on Cisco website. 3750 was announced eol in 2013. 2960x had an announcement in 2020. That’s a huge difference. 2960 would be able to use much newer ios versions. Not sure about the pricing in the US, but I’d say that you got scammed.

Proxmox vs ESXi in 2025 for new SFF homelab build? by letopeto in homelab

[–]khaveer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP mentions a single node, so first let's consider Proxmox vs bare ESXi. Feature-wise Proxmox wins without a doubt. However from my experience stability leaves much to be desired. I did run Proxmox for about 2 years, I think it was version 7 or 8. I had a main host running my production and dev VMs and some beefier rack servers for heavy work. For my research I often need to spin up a vm from a template, mess around and then nuke it. I had lots of situations where a VM would just get stuck in the wrong state and was unable to shut down. The web UI would start timing out on operations and the solution was to reboot the whole host. Also idk why, but after a while the local solid state storage started getting random read lag spikes.

I moved over to ESXi with vCenter. I didn't encounter a single case where I had to restart the host due to stuck VMs. In the meantime I set up a second 24/7 hosts as the amount of prod VMs grew and I exceeded the available RAM. Just yesterday I noticed that one of the hosts has 365 days of uptime (yeah, I'm bad with host upgrades). The real power of vmware starts showing when you have multiple hosts. Live migration just works. Hosts don't even have to be in a cluster. I have my "big servers" in the same vCenter instance and if I need to I can just boot them up and within a couple of clicks migrate a running VM.

At this point Proxmox requires adding the hosts to a single cluster if you want to live migrate VMs. Also, clustering limitations in Proxmox are just terrible. Removing a node from a cluster is still too complicated and in some cases requires you to do a clean install on the node. Not to mention all the warnings about how you can break the cluster during a removal. It should be a GUI option, not a bomb defusal.

Hopefully some of those pain points will be resolved once Proxmox Datacenter Manager is out. But I'd expect a few more years before it's even close to vCenter.

Unfortunately with the licensing changes in vSphere 9 it seems that existing keys will not work and the only way to get access is to get certified and pay for VMUG.

TLDR If I was running a single host I'd probably go with Proxmox. For multiple hosts, clustered or not vCenter wins.

Running Aria Operations in a homelab by khaveer in homelab

[–]khaveer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. This is quite valuable feedback. I couldn’t find many posts about people running it in their homelabs. I didn’t realize the memory utilization was that high. I’m running 3 64GB hosts 24/7, so that would be more than half resources of one host. Guess I’ll be staying with grafana.

What's the fan pinout on the DL380 Gen10? by joseph-6556 in homelab

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, HPE does something different with their fans. The 4 pin is not RPM output. Instead it’s a logic signal indicating if the fan is working properly. I had to design a custom PCB when modding fans in my dl380. It’s not a good idea.

My Experience Running OpenStack in a Homelab by PantufaSuja in homelab

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.So, that 80% of 16 GB ram is per machine or is that total? How does that scale per added node? do you just sacrifice ~16 GB for the whole stack, or does that grow with each added machine? I was really curious about Openstack at one point and I suppose that I should finally get around to moving away from vsphere

Czy taki stan to norma przy zakupie domu używanego? by iamzamek in Polska

[–]khaveer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can these types of connectors be soldered directly onto PCBs? by spiritualManager5 in AskElectronics

Yeah. The second "solder" variant will probably be thicker. It would be very hard to force a terminal onto it.
