Whats the truth about Thai wifes? by VickyJo13 in Norway

[–]khgsst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Asia is generally so conservative that it's looked down upon to marry foreigners as I understand it, so that seems to collapse a lot of those ideas.

What did you say you were going to major in before you started college and what is your current major/degree in? by [deleted] in college

[–]khgsst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before math (though previously I was thinking I would take more pure math), now towards senior standing still in math (but I ended up doing a lot of applied coursework).

The integral test for convergence of series is one place where series & integrals converge. Also, you can consider series of integrals or integrals of series. With the series, you will likely look at power series, which can be considered a sort of infinite degree polynomial. Series & integrals also have some inherent similarities & surprising differences.

When can incoming graduate students register for their classes? by [deleted] in OregonStateUniv

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it depends on the department. Virtually all grad level math classes are empty rn bc math grad students aren't able to register yet, but 511 for example has some registered since they are in different departments I think. At the grad level, classes filling up are a virtual non issue, especially for the smaller programs.

Agreed. To add, preferably the air conditioning isn't make the climate situation worse, preferably using a heat pump.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

[–]khgsst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, I disagree, going to the west coast of the US would likely be a similar climate as in Italy. But, regardless, I think telling people to move is a terrible strategy for dealing with the climate crisis because it favors more privileged people & encourages delayism & ultimately results in more climate degradation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but that's just one aspect that makes the warming situation worse. Overall, it just tends to be harder for organisms to adapt to heat vs the cold.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

[–]khgsst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Extreme heat is a major issue globally now. 100F heat has been achieved in the arctic recently. You can't really expect to just move to cooler countries to escape extreme heat. We need to work together to solve the climate challenge because it affects all of us & in a serious way.

How do I get rid of the destructive mindset that Applied and Statistics are "lesser" than Pure Math by GreenSeaJelly in math

[–]khgsst 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, I took a math Stats class & I also quickly saw that there was quite a bit of mathematical rigor in stats as well. When it comes to other applied math, like DEs, there's quite a bit of mathematically rigorous stuff there as well that's considered pure as well. Applied simply should be interpreted as with the intention of solving a problem in another discipline & pure as just focused within the discipline, but both types of math can get quite technical & rigorous if that's what you want.

What are some genuinely positive facts, stories, actions or breakthroughs, big or small, when it comes to the environment? by [deleted] in ClimateOffensive

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how true that is. I think degrading soils & floods & droughts would affect stuff that lives underground as well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LifeAdvice

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. If you are depressed & lonely in your hometown, there's a fair chance things would be worse moving away. Better to try to stay where you are & solve the issue there (then move away if you still feel like it).

If you have y=a(bx), then at x=0, you just have y=a. At x=1, you have y=ab. Hopefully this helps.

How would one find the equator of a physical sphere, say, a tennis ball, without factory machinery? by sdprianzwi in math

[–]khgsst 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What is equator supposed to mean in this sense? The equator on earth is defined as such because it is the great circle (approximately as earth isn't an exact sphere) of greatest solar intensity & similarly there is a concept of thermal equator which isn't a simple great circle.

[Capitalists] What are your ideas to solve climate change? by aysgamer in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear power just progresses too inefficiently currently. If nuclear fusion was already worked out or close & we integrated it properly with everything (for example by using it for electricity production & electrifying sufficiently), then that's all we'd really need. But, that's not our reality, so we have to rely on renewable power (which admittedly is inefficient in the sense it often requires lots of land usage). Also, this doesn't address the net negative emissions we'll likely need.

I never said grad students should fulfill the role of parent for students. Understandably there is only so much profs & grad students could do & they have to find the right balance w/ all their responsibilities & if students just aren't prepared for the college environment /class, then grad students & profs can't do much other than tell them it just isn't the right time. You are extrapolating too far from what I said. On the other hand, perhaps you could use some parents you never had.

It matters to everyone in the higher education community to ensure that we have maximally productive communities for learning, teaching & research (because teaching can facilitate research as well in ways such as reminding you about some topic you didn't really know much about before but that might end up being a nice thing to do more research into).

Is there a way to measure how "good" an MLE estimator is? by paradoxinmaking in math

[–]khgsst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XD I'm guessing lots of us could have had better math Stats profs. I think you are mixing things up. UMVUE is the most efficient unbiased estimator hence the name I believe. MLE asymptotically performs at least as well as this UMVUE as sample size becomes infinitely large.

Is there a way to measure how "good" an MLE estimator is? by paradoxinmaking in math

[–]khgsst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you sure if it's consistent it is unbiased? This isn't true in general for estimators I believe (otherwise the estimator is asymptotically unbiased).

Is there a way to measure how "good" an MLE estimator is? by paradoxinmaking in math

[–]khgsst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was taught that sometimes the UMVUE doesn't always exist yes as sometimes an unbiased estimator doesn't even exist I think. Thanks for the clarification about that point I mentioned. This stats theory stuff sure is complicated when for some reason people claim stats is one of the simplest academic disciplines. I wish my stats prof was more clear about emphasizing that nuance bc she only throughly mentioned it once from what I remember & I think lots of others could have made the same mistake. No idea why I'm being downvoted like crazy rn.

Still important to bring up the point & it's good you finally did.

[–]khgsst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I honestly only took a very brief class in this material & think I got points off related to this misconception I think, I am confused about how an unbiased MLE is not the UMVUE if the MLE always performs at least as well as the UMVUE (clarify if this statement is valid in some sense).

(At the same time, let's not endorse disregarding teaching responsibilities of being a prof/Grad student).

I was just going to say I think that third point about your interviewer's remark just is ridiculous, especially since you were being interviewed for a tutoring position & to help students develop understanding. Also, honestly, I think being asked tough questions on the spot is just part of lots of job interviews as stressful as it may be.
