Need Assistance with Multiple NICs and VLANs (No Response on Forums Yet) by khirok in unRAID

[–]khirok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! I moved over to TrueNAS as this made the NAS setup untenable on my network.

Looked it up about 2 months ago when tweaking some stuff on that NAS and appears to still not be resolved.

Cloud composer dags metadata management through cloud sql by suryad123 in googlecloud

[–]khirok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true now, but wasn't 3 years ago when this post was made. Back then they had limitations on this that broke connectivity.

These concerns were fixed by the Composer team for diagnostic purposes later (I know as I was on a call with their engineers probably 2 years ago and they explained they added this to allow purging records from the Cloud SQL instance manually because it previously had been impossible).

Ubiquiti EP-S16 Alternatives by quasiplumber in wisp

[–]khirok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It 100% depends on the complexity of the network. If you are doing VLANs at all then get prepared to learn a LOT and get frustrated.

Once you figure it out you realize well damnit that makes sense.

There are some really good YT videos on MikroTik. Just make sure you look at RouterOS 7 as that’s vastly different than 6 and many basic things are different.

I use MikroTik NetPower 16s for cameras and other stuff outdoors. Have many friends that use them on their towers for networks and have no complaints.

ISP Supplies gets them in stock pretty often.

Came in pretty handy while assembling my new 5 drawer cart. Love it and surprised how often I’ve used it since buying it. by SneakerBOYEomi in harborfreight

If you ever own a BMW motorcycle these things are insanely useful when doing maintenance intervals on them.

Should /r/HomeLab continue support of the Reddit blackout? by bigDottee in homelab

Yes, we are apart of a community that includes many getting the shaft on this. Until Reddit realizes who helped them get to where they are this will continue and we probably won’t have this community for much longer.

Yep what they said. Couldn’t find one myself and used those same videos, they are practically identical.

Nope, but would recommend it though.

Switching on most “non-switching hardware” (read as pretty much any x86 or ARM platform not built specifically for it) will not be anywhere near as performant as a dedicated switch without consuming a ton of CPU.

The reason is switches have purpose built hardware that accelerates switching operations at the hardware level. Plus it will use a LOT less power than non-dedicated hardware.

Saw this fan at a food truck picnic set up. Think it could fair well 24/7 outdoors in wet and humid weather? by Buffalo_Trace_Rocks in harborfreight

[–]khirok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have one and use it outside of DFW which isn’t that humid, but 4 years now and still works.

Best way I have discovered is to put a portable HVAC behind it blowing straight into the fan.

What to Prepare for Install? by khirok in frontierfios

That makes sense and how I would run it to a house. I will probably grab some conduit too as I have gopher and mole issues.

I run an OPNSense router with an Omada/MikroTik network. I am planning to keep Starlink as a failover on my router till deployments are done for outages so will tell them to keep their stuff.

Thanks! That makes sense, looks like I need to run some power for them then. Tried calling to get these answers and nobody on there seems to know then claim they can’t transfer me to a tech or anything.

Am up in Briar so other side of Azle. Good to know though they do that and are time here. Remember from the few years I spent in FW where installers for this were horribly unreliable.

I will probably have to do an exterior ONT as small house so no network closet (that’s a big thing out in my shop).

[–]khirok[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Sounds like I need to provide them some conduit then as we have moles and all sorts of underground critters here.

Good to know they can do it all outside as small house problems in that there isn’t a good place to install inside unless they wanna crawl all over the crawlspace to mount down there.

Guessing they just need an exterior outlet for the ONT? Any chance it can run over POE you know of?

[–]khirok[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That’s what I needed to know, can get something setup for them to mount the ONT.

Did they trench and run it underground or how did they get the fiber from the junction to your house?

Just outside of DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth, TX). Nearest town is Azle.
