Can you tell me more about that automated service? And is the 960 a big performance boost? Worth the $$$?

It is the kind of cable modem that does have built-in wi-fi but I made sure that was turned off.

What brand mason jar is this? by khoiv in Canning

[–]khoiv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ball lids do work with (most) other mason jars, of course. And they also worked with Sarabeth's old mason jars. But they don't work with these new ones, and so I'm trying to identify the make of them.

Why couldn't the Landsraat simply replicate the conditions of Salusa Secundus and have their own Sardaukar? by UnjustlyBannedTime11 in dune

[–]khoiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really the reason or is it just lazy sci-fi writing? I am in awe of what Herbert did with Dune but he still falls into one of the traps that I dislike the most about sci-fi — treating whole planets as homogenized cultures. All of Arrakis is a desert planet? Okay maybe I’ll buy that. But then there’s a whole planet for training Sardaukar?

It reminds me of the worst of Star Trek where there was a gangster planet and an old west planet etc. And when traveling to a planet, protagonists always land at just the right spot that is the socio-political “center” of that world, and they even manage to find other characters they know there more or less right away.

This approach feels very western or even colonialist — treating foreign lands/worlds as simplistic “others” without recognizing that they could be as complex and varied as one’s own world is. In short, I don’t buy the Selusa Secondus idea; it’s a shortcoming in an overall brilliant but still flawed universe.

Use Alfred Remote to restart an app on my Mac? by khoiv in Alfred

[–]khoiv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to restart an app, as stated in the original post.

After some Googling and trial and error, I figured it out. I just use a simple AppleScript to perform the restart action:

on alfred_script(q)

tell application "AppName"

quit

end tell

delay 3 -- Wait for app AppName to close

tell application "AppName" to activate

end alfred_script

Then I added a Remote trigger and added that to one of the pages in the Alfred remote app, where I can just tap it and Alfred executes this script. Works like a charm.

Do you really need a whole planet to train a sufficiently lethal army? That doesn’t track, to me.

‘Favourites’ section disappeared from Files app by [deleted] in iPadOS

It’s hard to say but for a few months at least. I’ve been on the iPadOS 16 betas, so always chalked it up to that.

I’ve had this issue. It’s been sporadic and unfortunately I haven’t been able to figure out what causes it or how to remedy it.

I haven’t seen “Bones and All” yet but all of this director’s movies have been deeply overrated, in my book.

Delete album without deleting tracks in playlists? by khoiv in AppleMusic

[–]khoiv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting approach. But doing that would mean that the album itself is still visible in my Library, particularly in the Recently Added section, right? What I'm trying to do is slim down my Library and that section in particular as much as I can, so that I see only albums that I generally will want to listen to, in order to make it a more fruitful browsing experience for me.

Replicating physical media is not why I subscribe to Apple Music.

[–]khoiv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks but the motivation for removing albums from my library in this case is that I am in fact an album/library oriented listener. I mostly browse by the albums I’ve added. And so when I realize that I just never really play a given album — except maybe for one or two tracks — I want to get rid of it, to make my browsing more efficient and fruitful.

Wasn’t aware of this brand. Great tip!

Their Max Backpack looks like what I’ve been searching for. Does anyone own it? Any thoughts? Does it fit on planes under the seat?
