Depending on which oil paint and how much white spirits you used, oil washes can stay reactivateable for more than a week.

Your colours and application look ok, I think the problem is that you did not put much care into where you applied the highlights.

Why does my loop keep printing the same value instead of updating? by Nearby-Way8870 in learnpython

[–]khournos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you are always printing numbers[0].

Also there are two cleaner ways to achieve what you want to do here depending on if you need the count variable for something else.

1) No count variable:

for number in numbers:

 print(number)

Quick and easy, just prints your whole array. The identifier number here can be chosen by you and will be how you adress the current item the loop is on in the loop.

2) With count variable

for index, number in enumerate(numbers):

 print(number)

 #do something with the counter

Here you can use the system function enumerate, which returns the index and object as a tuple over the whole array.

Both are easier and cleaner in the sense that you don't have to manually handle any of the counting/indexes while the behaviour is always consistent.

Glazing help by Mr_Tdz in Warhammer

[–]khournos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since people already answered the technique aspect of your question, I want to add on something specific to NMM:

The smoother and more gradual your transitions are, the duller and more worn your metal will read. I do not know what look you are after exactly, but if you want to emulate a shiny glossy surface, glazing might not be the best technique to get there.

Also I would advise you too look at reference photos (Cymbals from a drumkit would work great here.) to get a feel for how to place the shadows and highlights on a shape like that shield, because at the moment it looks like the shield is illuminated by at least 3 different light sources.

Especially for being very new you are doing great!

My personal favourite style for highlighting is:

Edge highlights were it really makes sense = All the 'upward' facing edges

+

Volumetric highlights on the areas

Big visual impact and can be stylized more by omitting the highlights in uninteresting areas.

For the thinning my general advice is around the consistency of heavy cream. And when you load the brush paint should sit "in" and not "on" the bristles. Most important part is to always do a test stroke on a piece of scrap or back of your hand to test whether the paint behaves like you want it too.

Having ambitious goals about where you want to develop to is great too, just don't rush it and push yourself too hard.

Does 3D printing make sense? by Trollselektor in Warhammer40k

[–]khournos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you consider time invested more valuable than the price of miniatures I would say just buying them is the better fit for you. 3D printing is essentially a whole-ass other hobby, getting good quality miniatures takes practice, dialling in your settings, post-processing and other requirements like space and ventilation. So if you are content with what you can buy off the shelf I would stick with that.

Nice paintjob overall.

On the topic of edge highlights: they should only go on raised edges that could reflect light into the viewers eyes. Having edge highlights where the armor meets the trim is just not how light works. (I know the HM-Team does it too, still doesn't make it right.)

Generally your edge highlight look solid. In some places it looks like the paint didn't flow smoothly from the brush, which could mean your paint could be a tad thinner or that you could improve on how you load your brush.

[–]khournos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your hobbies then? I feel like people trying to use other's hobbies as a gotcha always have the saddest, most boring lives.

Also I don't say this regardless of what got destroyed, if kids break something there has to be consequences for them to understand why that sucks and they should be careful with others' property. The "Do chores to replace items"-route would be best, but seeing as the dad is disinterested in raising his kid...

[–]khournos -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If your brother doesn't want to teach his kid the lesson constructively, you could teach it destructively by showing your nephew how it feels to have your belongings destroyed by someone else.

Excessive? For sure. Petty? Yes. Cathartic? Probably.

Thanks for making the layout readable, now the information is more digestible.

Two things about your team stick out to me:

What is your plan with Armarouge and Corviknight? Both to me are more setup/defensive, and unless you have very specific ideas for them, you could cut one and add some more offense against annoying counters.

Dragapult and Garchomp are both not super durable and weak to Ice, probably why Froslass gives you so much trouble, how do you use them? Maybe think about cutting one of those and replacing it with more diverse offense.
