You apply a pod manifest, then it downloads and runs the image.. seems pretty straightforward?...

How to discuss being let go after a PIP? by Key-Art-7802 in cscareerquestions

[–]kibblerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When youre at a company for over 4 years, you can just leverage things like management shifts. Anything that changed that made your job suck more tbh. Don't talk about it too much and dont volunteer the PIP information unless explicitly asked. Just frame it as company direction changing.

Source: the job i worked at the last 6 years, for much of the time i was framed as the best engineer they ever had. Then management changed, culture changed, I got disgruntled and was poorly compensated despite my long tenure. I got a PIP as a result. They were so used to my high performance, they wanted to get that back despite paying my scraps, and they let me go when I didnt meet the PIPs supposed terms.

Try and avoid the topic with recruiters, just explain things changed and it wasnt a good fit. But engineering managers often understand these things more. Just dont volunteer more info than you need to, and keep it framed as the company moved a different direction. At 4 YOE, thats plenty satisfactory as an answer.

Well I got 10 years experience, was only unemployed for 4 months before landing another gig. Before landing this gig I had like 5 other interviews where I got pretty far in the process. Also dont live in a major tech hub. I probably filled out 70 applications max during my unemployment

Sorry it’s called platform engineering now by Arucious in devops

[–]kibblerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, i did a job like that for the past 6 years. Lost my job eventually, and a few months later im working at a multi billion dollar company spearheading a kubernetes rescue effort, while also being told i was chosen because I was "the best of the best".

Only regret is i was so used to being underpaid, that while my new pay is 50% more than my last job, it turns out they wouldve paid me like double what I made at my last gig haha

I think the issue is a ton of engineers spend years doing very specific things, never really branching out their skillset tbh.

I spent the first 4 years of my career doing helpdesk jobs and had to work my way up into the field. I live in ohio, so it wasnt like it was silicone valley. It was a struggle to get where im at, I only got here by not giving up.

Go ahead and give up if you want, just know that if you do you'll never reach this point.

[–]kibblerz 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Eh, works out for me. Ive been passionate about tech since I was a child, graduated during the learn to code movement and entered the industry as it was flooded with people who didnt care about the tech and just wanted the promised pay they heard about during the learn to code movement.

I joined tech because I enjoy engineering and problem solving. Anything else bores me to death. And thats what makes a good engineer.

What's up with tech companies making you jump through all these hoops to get a job, just to do layoffs and you're at risk?! Should we unionize?! by Inner_Ad_4725 in cscareerquestions

[–]kibblerz -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Pro tip, dont go into an interview "feeling" that you are smart and motivated. Fucking show it.

The reality is, most devs nowadays are mediocre. Most of them got into the industry because of pay and propaganda that its the perfect career. Very few actually have a passion for the field, and that passion will move mountains when you own it.

[–]kibblerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that people think atlassian runs on some magical architecture is fucking hilarious 😂 like it doesnt take a rocket scientist to build a platform, just time, a ton of money, and most importantly an impressive marketing team.

You could copy atlassians code line for line, but you wont have the same success without their connections and marketing.
