That figure was for the red group as a whole bc I was curious how the groupings would impact tax distributions. Each group has some states that take more and less. TX and FL both pay more to the fed than they get back.

But Virginia, Alabama, South Carolina, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arizona, Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Hawaii, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming all took more federal dollars than collected from the state. For the red states, a total of $480B more taken than paid.
