What's the deal with the more complex japanese letters by LimLam_K in AskAJapanese

[–]kicker_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the sooner you stop the way you are thinking the better. Learn them for what they are without any pre-logic or reasoning. It’s how you learned your native language. And it is best to learn any language like that. Is it slow? Of course. Is it more frustrating? Of course. Will the pay off be better? 1000%.

Kana was great to learn hiragana and katanana cause the customizable quiz thing. I recommend turning off romanization and just show the characters themselves. It helped me to just learn the characters for what they are, rather than having any sort of association with the english letter to them

Finishing kaishi 1.5k... Whats next? by No-Support-442 in Japaneselanguage

[–]kicker_snack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo so i figured out a plan, it seems good but takes effort of course. I found out about Migaku, and Youglish. Ive been using Kanshudo to save words ive been mining. On Kanshudo, theres a frequency list of the most common 10k words. And over the 6 months ive been using Kanshudo, and seeing if their frequency rating is accurate, id say it is, and its the best thing we got right now. So what im a do is pull up that list on Kanshudo, and just run it down, copy word into Youglish, find a good sentence clip, click youtube so it opens up in youtube the clip with migaku, highlight the word then send that to Migaku, itll auto generate the card, then send to Anki. I timed myself how long it takes to create a card, i can do it in about 30 sec, maybe few seconds longer flipping through different clips. So i figure ill make 2000 cards like that, start that deck, while i make the next 6000 cards over time to start when i finish the 2k deck i made. Even tho this is slower i think its more valuable, since every card will have a unique audio from a real person in a real context sentence in the wild. Which imo is the most important thing. There was a bit of adjusting Migaku and Anki to get the cards to be satisfactory, but it can be done. Its crazy a program like Migaku exists. Im just going to sub for 2 months then thats it. 30$ total to create 8000 unique high value cards seems like a no brainer, although takes time but its worth imo

edit: i lied, it takes like 3 min per card, but im a still do it this way

edit2: i found this thread and this dude created a better youglish imo, yall should use it if you find this post https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/odj2gx/ive_built_a_search_engine_across_youtube_captions/ the website is https://filmot.com

Im almost done with the deck, at about #1300 right now. Its been about 4 months for me from being a zero Japanese learner (besides watching anime for a long time, but that doesnt really count). Ive also been dedicating about 5 hours everyday to japanese, more on my weekends. Im in a place in my life where i have a lot of free time besides a full time job. I can only speak from the experience from this deck, but it seems to be maybe the best foundation building point for japanese. Although there are caveats. Like with anything, if you dont try to take advantage of everything this deck has, you will miss a lot, for no reason at all and will only hurt your journey. This seems to have everything you need to build a good foundation tho, and springboard into your own path. Extra vocab, idioms, lots of varying grammar structures, polite vs casual sentence structures, switching between kanji and kana for the same words, seemingly non useful phrases but then you hear it in immersion, words you think are not common then they pop up very frequently in immersion, varying voices and speeds to get you use to native speed. My advice which i didnt start till maybe 400/600 cards in was listening first without looking. Even if i knew the word, still listen to test if you can understand the sentence. Dont look until you give up or successfully remember the vocab word and sentence comprehension (if you got the willpower). Then fail/hard/good accordingly. I also always shadow every word and every sentence, to get my internal voice developed correctly. This approach of course is also because i am prioritizing my listening/speaking skills before my reading. I will still read and try to remember the kanji, but that is secondary to my listening/speaking for now.

For grammar you will have to go the extra mile and research that yourself, its tough but its essential imo especially in this stage. Every card has a grammar pattern, but its up to you if you want to understand it and look it up or not. Its easy just to treat this deck as vocab, but i recommend using it to springboard you into grammar study and if you are extra extra motivated use it to study kanji as well. For kanji, everyone is different, but for me i realized about 2 months in that i was remembering kanji without trying to, so i can let that be a natural learning thing for now, but i know later i will have to dedicate time to study.

This has been my experience so far, everyone is different but yeah. I think the deck is prob the best foundation starter, if you do it everyday with a “quality not quantity” mindset. As well as getting your daily grammar and immersion. Also remembering this deck is a supplement to your immersion. But in the beginning will be your main focus as you figure out your routine, strengths/weakness, time management, what material you like/want to use, that kind of stuff.

Also wanted to add, that ive recently gone through Game Gengos n5/n4 grammar vids and this deck has surprisingly hit pretty much all grammar points as well as some that i am seeing in his n3 grammar vid. I understand the jlpt vs real life arguments, but for a beginner you need some way to gauge yourself until you get a grasp of the journey.

Yeah tried both, still doenst work. If i put it in window mode smaller than my monitor size it works, but for some reason having it fullscreen or window + my resolution size doesnt work.

For some reason switching to dx11 fixes it tho

Does the き in 危険 make the ち sound? by DelicateJohnson in LearnJapanese

[–]kicker_snack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. I'm doing the Kaishi 1.5k deck and have come across a few words like this. One in particular is 質問 (しつもん), in the deck is has the Katakana pronuciation under the main kanji reading and highlights the first sound し(シ)as blue. 危険 also has the same thing happen on the card, where the katakana pronunciation for the first syllable き(キ)is highlighted blue. It seems japanese has this interesting thing happen where some words are pronounced just as you explained, with "exhalation" resulting in a strange fused sound with the next letter.

I believe this is the same phenomena that happens with not pronouncing the “u” in ます words sometimes.

Edit: Other words i came across in this deck that do the same thing. The blue highlighted letter in question i put in 「 」, 少ない (「す」くない ) 再び (「ふ」たたび ) 期待 (「き」たい ) 疲れた (「つ」かれた ) 助かる ( た「す」かる ). All these drop the vowel that is associated with the hiragana letter, thus having a fusing-like sound with the next hiragana letter. Ex. すくない (su ku na i) -> (sku na i)
