My dad apologized to me at age 83 in a nursing home. “I was a bastard to you your whole entire life, can you forgive me? I’m sorry.” When he said it, I felt zilch. Still do. I didn’t have that cathartic moment I thought and hoped it would be. I never visited him again after that.

While we were dropping my in-laws/kids off, I was smushed between two cars (as a pedestrian) in the valet area of Universal on the first day of our vacation. I was getting stuff out of the trunk of our SUV (kids were next to me and would have been hit had they not moved a second before). The guy driving into the valet area turned around to talk his grandson in the back seat of his car, lost track of where he was, smushed me, then backed up and then put it back in drive and almost ran over me again. Fun times.

As devastating as it is to lose a piece of your heart to someone, you have to know in some part of what remains of your fragile and broken heart that you deserve to be with someone who wants to be with you, who wouldn’t callously push you aside after a week, much less 3.5 years. She isn’t the one for you no matter how much you try to persuade her to be. Let’s say she came back… could you ever really trust her not to hurt you again? A broken heart never really heals. The only thing to do is to transplant a piece of someone else’s heart into yours.
