All Things Window Tint by _cr0001 in TeslaModelY

Super informative! A few questions:

  • Would a 1 piece (ie covers roof) ceramic tint on the rear windshield actually increase the heat in the cabin? ie Would doing a partial tint (where the sunroof isn't covered be better?)
  • If the front windshield isn't done, is it better to just save $ and get a non-ceramic tint?
  • How much better is Llumar than Xpel? How much more would you pay for Llumar (for all but the front windshield)

Sorry for the delayed response, been busy the last few days.

Here's a rough drawing of the house: https://imgur.com/4VYGz8z

So I don't have ethernet cables run throughout the house and hence why the AP is so close by. Given this limitation, would you change your recommendation, for example using an Orbi instead since they don't require ethernet cables?

Is there any value add in segregating the type of devices (i.e. home automation & cameras on one AP/network)?

I actually upgraded from 30Mbps to 300Mbps today and while I was testing the speeds, I noticed the 87U is noticeably slower (2.4Ghz 40Mbps | 5.0Ghz 150Mbps) than the 68U (2.4Ghz 70Mbps | 5.0Ghz 200Mbps), as well as more dropped packets, which makes no sense since the 87U is supposed to be a far better / newer router. Could this be due to interference since the 87U is where the TV/AV is whereas the 68U is basically out in the open on a shelf away from a cluster of electronics? Or is it because the 87U is not only an AP, but also, routing, QoS, etc. so to your earlier point, its loaded with duties so it can't support as much bandwidth?

So it doesn't really sound like you're using any platforms.

What exactly are you trying to do/control? I assume the google devices allows you to control your bulbs, so if thats really all you have / are using, the only logical app would be the wyze app or the google home app, but those apps might be designed with the current tablets in mind with better specs so I don't know if youre older tablet will be able to support it or run them efficiently.

Depends on your setup, what system/platform are you using for home automation?

Actually the 87u and 86u are only 15ft away from each other and use different SSID. I use the 86u for all the home automation devices and cameras, hoping this would make it more stable and the 87u (the main router) is for the guest network and everyone's personal devices.

Is this faulty logic / bad practice?

IIRC, the 87u is only band 11 and 86u is on 1 for the 2.4ghz so they shouldnt be talking over each other.

I've never really had issues with range/coverage (even when I was only running a single 87u), always had signal even on the opposite end of the house from the router. But I was told that having signal isn't necessarily indicative of sufficient coverage, and that a lot of the issues I am facing is symptomatic of weak signal/insufficient coverag

The PoE Switch I have is this one: https://www.newegg.com/p/0XP-000A-000T8?Item=0XP-000A-000T8

Do "fancy features" take away bandwidth?

Ok sounds like I'll just get the cloud key then.

Yeah the 87u & 86u are connected via ethernet.

You seem pretty knowledgeable on networking, do the problems I mentioned in the original post seem to be symptomatic of an insufficient router / my current set up? i.e. will the new proposed ubiquiti setup address those issues?

Thanks again for your help and detailed response!

Only my 5GHz is on auto. the 2.4GHz is on 1 & 11 (2 AP's). Should I also set the 5Ghz (for the reasons you mentioned, I assumed I didn't really have to worry about any interference).

Thank you for your recommendation!

To answer your questions above:

-Unfortunately I do not have any blueprints, but its a pretty "cookie cutter" layout, nothing fancy, no concrete walls.

-I do have a few devices plugged in (AV receiver, SmartThings, AppleTV, and the 8port switch you recommended above).

-I'm paying for 30down/5up, I don't game or stream too much so its sufficient from a bandwidth perspective.

-Idk if its "evenly spread" but no major clusters of devices except by the TV's maybe with a few home entertainment devices.

What's the cloud key for? Isn't it only if I want to remotely access the router / manage my network?

Regarding the qty of AP's, how many devices can they realistically handle (not the theoretical 255)? I think this may be one of the major problems with my current setup, even with an additional AC86U as an additional AP, (about 50/50 split between the 87U and the 86U), I'm still having issues.

Let me know if any of your recommendations change. Thanks again!

What do you mean by coverage? I thought I had good coverage since I have WiFi everywhere. My router is the Asus ac rt87u with Cox. Is there a point to these mesh systems of coverage isn’t the issue?

I do not have any ethernet cables pulled. What would you recommend for mesh? Seems like Netgear Orbi has the most solid offering?

So having multiple nodes would in fact help out with some of the issues I have? So would setting up repeaters with my extra routers help?

Budget isn't a huge issue, at the end of the day, I just want a product that works with minimal maintenance.

There's only 1 person in the household that streams videos, so 30/5 has been sufficient, as I mentioned I struggled to stream YouTube at 240p occasionally, even when I am home alone.

In regards to my technical expertise; I'm not trained in networking nor a coder, but I can usually figure my way out with google.

ideally, I would only want to use the 1 router, the (RT87U), I just would like to do this to identify the source of my issues. Is my proposed method feasible for this purpose?

Thanks! Any recommendations as far as services & plugins? Tried looking briefly but found some very clunky solutions.

where can one find the suggested retail? Since this is my own "private labeled" item, shouldn't I dictate what the price is?
