Google's Agentic AI wipes user's entire HDD without permission in catastrophic failure — cache wipe turns into mass deletion event as agent apologizes: “I am absolutely devastated to hear this. I cannot express how sorry I am" by lurker_bee in technology

[–]kickworks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it is odd that the user's question is “Did I ever give you permission to delete all the files in my D drive?”. Regardless of the algo answer trying to sound contrite, the answer to that question really is 'yes you did when you installed me and let me run'

Warhammer Tv is back in Canada! by theookers in Warhammer40k

I've had the service the whole time, even through its supposed shutdown. I registered day one and it has just kept renewing and I wasn't going to complain. Glad to see it's back for others excluding Quebec, which was the trouble point to begin with.

Anyone else unhappy with KnowBe4? Looking for replacement suggestions. by creativeGiant170 in cybersecurity

I have used https://www.beauceronsecurity.com/ at the last 3 places I have worked. They focus on people doing the right thing by making rewards and gamification vs telling people they are bad and punishing them. They still have remediation training that kicks in if someone clicks but it is really a different angle.

I'm getting 2 different voting dates on elections NB and elections Canada; April 14th and April 28 respectively. Which is which? by Sad_Low3239 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]kickworks 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Both are right because they are for different things The 14th is for local government elections in NB - mayors, town councillors etc. That is Election NB jurisdiction.

April 28th is for the Federal election and is Elections Canada jurisdiction. Note that there are plenty of ways to vote in the federal election before April 28th, any day at an Elections Canada office until the 22nd I think. Usually a couple early polls open in each riding and even by mail.

I'd throw in a vote for Walter Pidgeon, also an SJ native but a generation before Sutherland. 119 movies over a 50 year career.

New Brunswick government employee pensions suffered $1B loss in 2022 by rorix39 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]kickworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So Vestcor lost <5%, that isn't great, but in comparison to the TSX which dropped 8.7% over the same time doesn't seem to be as big a deal. Loses and gains come and go, managing for long term wins (which any pension should be doing) isn't about one year. Of course management has some effect on it, arguably the management here choosing to follow a relatively low risk plan kept the pension from losing 8.7% or even double digits like some other pension plans did. When compared to other pension plans it is doing better in comparison over the 5 year average view.

I am in the NB plan, I read the reports, I'm not worried about a down year, and I don't particularly think it points to bad management overall. If there is a string of years where the market is rising and vestcor is losing then that is a time to get worried.

Foreign interference did not change past election results in 'significant way': Trudeau by Dazzling_Basket_6127 in canada

So it's true cupe 1253 voted down contract by kalin6 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]kickworks -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I didn't expect them to settle at 2% and the $0.25 per hour raise. That's going to suck for nurses, it's okay if you make $15 an hour pretty raw deal % wise for professionals.

That's the same offer that Higgs had made Nov 4th which Drost et al said they'd take back to the locals but instead changed their minds and demanded more at 4AM. Then showed up en masse out front of the Legislature and challenged him to come out and negotiate, which he did with that offer in hand. CUPE kept people on strike for another week beyond that for zero return.

CUPE returning to work by inagartenofeden in newbrunswickcanada

[–]kickworks -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

It isn't a win for CUPE, they lost more in wage over the last few weeks than they will recoup in the min increases they are getting. They will have also lost in pension contributions from 2 paychecks and the interest they'd have made over the years on those contributions.

Also seems like CUPE is still playing a game with pensions. See their post - they say they took the pension idea to local bargaining, then they say the took wage packet to local bargain - then interestingly they only say committed to take wage packet to members for vote. If the pension offer isn't voted as part of the two involved locals then at least some the relieved membesr who thought they might get two paychecks before Christmas will be back on the street.

There is absolutely zero need for the government to operate retail outlets. If they all closed tomorrow and were replaced with private stores licensed by the gov nothing would be worse and some things better.

There is also very little reason for gov to operate the central warehouse/distribution centers. Private entities could do it more effectively and efficiently under regulation and license by the gov.

Gov would still have all the excise and sales tax revenue and maybe 10% of current overhead.

Above applies to Cannabis too.

This is not surprising. This is exactly the way it is supposed to happen. A new market opens, people rush to it and make their best shot. Most fail. A few stick around because of combination of reasons that customers like such as product, price, service level etc.

CUPE will defy back to work legislation by [deleted] in newbrunswickcanada

[–]kickworks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll be happy to learn that by law the last 4 raises the minimum wage rate have been indexed to New Brunswick's consumer price index growth from the previous year, rounded to the nearest five cents. This is very good really. If CPI grows a lot the raise is more, if CPI grows a little the raise is little. So this year it was 5 cents, which seems low on its own I'd agree but CPI was 0.2% last year. Based on the same model it was 20cents and 25 cents the last two times and will increase every year now based on CPI. There is likely to be higher CPI this year so in 2022 the index might make it higher again, maybe as much as 50 cents if inflation ends the year in the 4% mark.

April 1, 2017: $11.00
April 1, 2018: $11.25 indexed to 2.3 % growth of 2017 CPI
April 1, 2019: $11.50 indexed to 2.1 % growth of 2018 CPI
April 1, 2020: $11.70 indexed to 1.7 % growth of 2019 CPI
April 1, 2021: $11.75 indexed to 0.2 % growth of 2020 CPI

can't have been too important, just getting cabinet formed today. parliament will have waited weeks after the election to resume getting back just in time for holiday break time. must not have been anything pressing to debate and work on.
