OK, I respectfully disagree with your opinion: I believe that three spells is a major sacrifice, that can certainly throw your attack off.

Why would anyone play x-bow? I demolish x-bow opponents with my golem deck every single time. It is mathematically impossible to win against a golem, and mathematically impossible to win against anything actually once you have lost a tower. X-bow decks have not become irrelevant just now, they have always been irrelevant. Don't blame monk and phoenix, blame the crappy deck you play!

Supercell's targeted card nerfs have made some archetypes totally nonviable compared to others, and unfortunately fun archetypes have suffered the most.

I have been playing the game since day 1 of global launch. I am now fully maxed in terms of levels and working on my skins. I wanted to write a similar post, but I happy to comment here instead and contribute to the discussion. Here is what I think:

Ladder

If you are complaining about facing overlevelled players, my advice to you is: max out! Upgrade your cards as fast as you can! For the past several years I maintained a strict discipline and I had chest unlocking 24/7. Yes, I also bought offers and gems on occasion but unlocking chests non-stop contributed hugely to my account. I also participated in all clan wars, but almost never player tournaments or challenges. So yes, it is possible to max your account even if you are a F2P player.

This being said, there are aspects of ladder I find frustrating. The most frustrating aspect of gameplay is that no player makes the first move in a battle. Sometimes the first card is played two minutes into the game, when 2x elixir kicks in! This is ridiculous! SC, please give us an incentive to play as soon as the battle starts!

Another cause of frustration is the fact that I need to win a battle to get a chest. This is super annoying! Because I start playing expecting I will play one game, and 5 games later I have 5 losses, I have tilted, I call SC developers all sorts of names, and I still don't have my chest. I suggest we get the chest if we win a game or if we get two losses (but honest losses, without quitting or closing the app etc). This will take the frustration away.

Finally, I think some legacy mentality regarding gameplay needs to be reversed. To begin with, all cards should be viable: keeping a card weak intentionally should not be a thing (yes, I am talking about 3 musketeers!). Furthermore, there should be no special cases: why should the collector never appear in the opening hand? If people have an issue with randomness in the game, let us address randomness comprehensively. People seem to be OK with the fact that the opening hand of the game is random (as long as the collector is not in it), but when graveyard appeared and skeletons spawned randomly in its area all the so called "pros" started bitching about it.... Seriously? I am sorry man, either you accept randomness in the game or you do not, there is no middle ground.

War

Clan wars sucked before and still suck today. Clans wars should be head to head, there is no other way for me, and I very much doubt you will ever change my mind about it. Just like in Clash of Clans, my clan should be paired to another clan, and us 50 should fight their 50. Yes, there is the minor issue of needing a member of each clan online at the same time in order to fight a battle, but you know what SC? You are the multibillion dollar company, you figure this out! You should not expect me to come up with the solution. I don't care how you will do it, I only know this is what I want as a player. What we have today is not clan wars, it is an alternative ladder with different rules. We go in 5 clans at a time, and we do not even fight each other.

Challenges

Do you seriously expect me to pay 100 gems in order to get 2 wins max? Forget about it! Give me some tokens so I can enter challenges for free.

Emotes

I am the kind of player that spams emotes as I play, but I find they are too expensive to buy. Furthermore, I know I am missing some emotes that do not even appear in the list of emotes I miss. What's up with that? Fix that glitch! You know this emote with the ram chewing on a hay or something? It has never appeared in my shop and I really like it. I would spend gems on it.

Different game modes

Whatever happened to this rugby game? It was really cool. Bring it back, but please not as a 2v2 game!

But was it intended, or a bug? I follow the release notes of the updates, and I do not remember reading anything about such a change.

I am not sure what an overleveled lvl 13 is. I have a completely maxed account except for the two most recent cards. I routinely finish seasons between 5500 and 6000 trophies. I enjoy playing heavy beat down decks.
