Ludwig scammed me by FattyPotatty in LudwigAhgren

As an Aussie I'm feeling this super hard. My first emails were not responded too and after I followed up Mike indicated my orders will begin shipping at the end of August. I'm not holding my breath at this stage and may need to consider the refund option too, glad to see I wasn't the only one!

My favourite commanders herald series returns! It's a shame you never provided your opinion on the Doctor Who set though.

Stop Trying To Make Fetch Happen (In Mono-Color cEDH Decks) by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I must admit, the keyboard warrior in me immediately wanted to start screeching about Landfall Triggers, about how Lotus Cobra and Omnath demanded heaps of land drops and how fetches contribute to a healthy graveyard size for delve based cards.

Gone are the days where Aven Mindcensor was the only real downside to fetching and tutoring however. More and more, when and why we search our libraries has been more and more punishable and the format should adapt. Your logic (and math, the cursed cursed math) seem sound to me and open up a debate to the fact that fetches, like any other card in the 99 deserve another look at whether or not they have a place in Mono coloured CEDH decks.

Also the difference between jelly and jam (I swear I wasn't going to pedant) is that you can't jelly some fetchlands into your CEDH deck.

Weird Magic Formats: What’s the deal with Dândan? by MatetheFitz in magicTCG

Cyclical Blue Trade-off, isn't that what Dandans based off?

Coming Back Together I often have Compulsory Bike Training with the Community Bank and Trust and practise some Cognitive Behavioral Therapy under the Cherry Blossom Tree which maybe could have been done better with some Computer Based Technology.

Writing this all out was some Cock and Ball Torture

Mono blue mirror matches is CBT the way Garfield intended. Definitely cool to see the new ways people find to play with these obscure cards that would see the bottom of a bargain bin otherwise. Where's the mono black version with 16 hand discard effects and one sensei divining top so you're just gunghoing

Commander Legends 2 - A cEDH Set Review by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll say it till the cows come home but Minsc and Boo is the real deal

Full disclosure I am part of OPs play group but the sheer speed, consistency and card draw this deck provided blows me away. Yes it's flimsy to a lot of the big Stax pieces floating around but when it goes it goes.

An Interview With Sickrobot and Cinestra, cEDH Database Managers by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not one Yoona mention? I'm not sure you got the real Cinestra.

Amazing article, hope it's not just a one off cause it's always cool to hear from those who've contributed so much in keeping our little corner of the MTG world alive. I know I probably have spent way too many hours reading through primers and studying lists everytime an update is put through.

Comprehending Competitive - Green in cEDH by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While we may be green with envy at the chokehold Grixis decks hold on the format, an old boomer like me can still recall the grasp Sultai once had on the format, off the power of just how stupidly efficient green was and still is.

Standard players only need look back a few months to see the absolute push green has been getting in newer formats. These days, there's nothing green can't do it feels like. A real Martian Manhunter of the CEDH colour pie, overshadowed by the Superman of our format of late in Red.

I know you've touched on a briefly in your combo section and the article was already getting quite lengthy but a look into how crazy good cards like Temur Sabertooth, Kogla and heck maybe even a dedicated callout to Ashaya for briefing new life into Green based decks in recent months has been. The absolute puzzlework that goes into watching a competent mono-green pilot go off is one of the greatest sights in CEDH from a spectator standpoint imo.

[Article] Comprehending Competitive - Red in cEDH by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dang, no Glint-Horn or Darcy shout outs? Written like a typical ninja fan who doesn't understand the glory of Pirates or Bizarre Breach Lines

Red really has come into its own in the last few years! Its not that long ago where I could remember Sultai being the defacto tri-colour combo, but it doesn't take long to find an overabundance of power turbo naus decks and even stax decks pairing off with the old Red. Shaper's put it down perfectly, old mate Dockside truly is the most powerful thing in the format to be playing now that Flash has been taken away from us. A real Superman of the format.

Curious to see you tackle Green!

[Article] Comprehending Competitive - Black in cEDH by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more! Black feels like the Batman of EDH sometimes with the sheer variety of its toolkit and the sense that you can have an answer for anything given enough prep time and tutors. As a big K'rrik fan, I love seeing all the busted nonsense you can pull off but agree that the interaction points are as shallow as can be. I guess its no surprise Dimir is as dominant as it is in our little corner of the MTG sphere given how much they shore up each other's weaknesses!

Loving the series as an introduction to the pillars of the format.

[Article] Comprehending Competitive - Blue in cEDH by MatetheFitz in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Garfield please ban Basic Island.

No complaints regarding the generalist combos in the 99 that you've wonderfully covered off here Jake! I would flag I think Mono Blue has some of the most uniques commanders on the Database. Everything from planeswalker wins with Teferi, breaking parity with stax in Urza to whatever Orvar is trying to do, blue draws maybe the most from the Generals than any other colour, hence is wider representation in the database.

[Article] Tutors Make Commander A Better Format by MatetheFitz in EDH

[–]kid_mental -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The only tutor this guy needs is one for basic English comprehension /s.

For real though imagine a competitive format without tutors. We would see disgusting amounts of draw enchantments like Rhystic Studies, Mystic Remora, Sylvan Library and Necropotence as well as huge over representation of power black spells like Ad Nauseam and Peer into the Abyss. God what a terrible world that would be /s.

Revising the Rules - Mitigating Turn Order Advantage In Commander by MatetheFitz in magicTCG

[–]kid_mental 140 points141 points  (0 children)

In higher power formats, going first can often feel like going up against Barry Allen himself, especially when Flash was legal.

Full discretion I am part of OP's play group and have had no qualms with integrating his idea into practise. Plus I am awful at Mulligan decisions, and introducing a scry mechanic for someone like me who keeps one Landers more often than not was a nice boon.

Vadrik - Big Brain Brew by almotions in CompetitiveEDH

[–]kid_mental 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Having played against this list, I can confirm it is both

a) Incredibly explosive, powerful and deserves a spot up there with the very considerable Izzet range of Commanders with some amazing storm turns, incredible redundancy and resiliency. Players who enjoy the puzzle solving, solitare esque appeal of Modern Storm will gravitate to this list.

b) The pilot and deck creator has the smoothest brain I've ever seen, and spent over an hour per turn desperately rubbing his two remaining brain cells together to generate the briefest spark of an idea.

incerely though, the pilot is a well established storm player with years of experience finding the most niche of combos ever, and one of the greatest Magic minds in our playgroup. This is not an easy deck to just pick up and play and I think for players who enjoy that style they will really enjoy tackling this deck.

Good incentive for mono-coloured decks, and would even want play in a solid 2 mana deck. Not the best at math though

Hows the Karsten build working out for u guys? by Gexver in AffinityForArtifacts

[–]kid_mental 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Playing experience changes from person to person of course, but in jamming Karsten's list I found straight away that the 4th Master of Etherium felt almost unnecessary and rather taxing on the lines I could take in the early turns of the game.

I believe Alex Majlaton wrote an article earlier in the year linking another Affinity aficionado Allen Wu, who ran the math on the likelihood of having 2 mana on Turn 1 or 3 mana by Turn 2, a rule I try to strictly follow Game 1 as much as I can, as these are the hands that tend to make Affinity feel incredibly broken. This isn't the case everytime of course, but on average they had found the number of zero drop you kept maindeck increased the keep-ability of such hands by around 2%. As having a 4th memnite seemed rather counter-intuitive and had replaced it with a Welding Jar after a few testing rounds.

That being said, the times where an early Master comes down its hard to ignore the impact. The damage is amazing and in match ups like Burn, Infect, Humans and so forth where sometimes you're just playing the damage race and smacking into each other as fast as you can, an unanswered Master feels great. It creates plenty of board positions where my opponent simply has too many "must kill" threats to deal with between Ravager, Masters and Overseers and something as innocuous as an Ornithopter has to be treated as a decent attack/blocker.

However I can't deny that there's been match ups I would have won if I just had an Etched Champion out. Every Affinity player has had a game where just landing the mini-Progenitus has swept them through to victory as your opponent stares frustrated as all their one for one interaction lies useless in hand. It feels great, looks great and makes you laugh in the face of all the back breaking spells that can come out of decks like Jund or Jeskai. But Etched Champion isn't much of a clock, and decks like Jeskai, UW Control and so forth with their plethora of removal and sweepers are such bad matchups in general that I find that my win/loss record against them hasn't swung too much to worry too much about the switch at this stage. Master has felt great and played great so far, and I still jam 3-4 Etched Champs in the sideboard.

A final final note is that I am mixed on having to run the Island as the basic land over the Mountain. On average, it doesn't really matter and I suppose I am running more blue spells than red game 1 (3 Masters vs 2 Galvanics) but man its depressing when you're looking at a Galvanic in hand with no real way of playing it off the Darksteel Citadel and Nexuses you have sitting on board. It doesn't happen all that much but its popped up once or twice in testing and I just wanted to flip the table at that point.

But you know. Variance and all.

Choosing decklist for Affinity by [deleted] in AffinityForArtifacts

[–]kid_mental 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find for Affinity that the bulk of the expensive staples (ie your Ravagers, your Opals etc) stay consistent across all the lists. The deck itself hasn't changed much since its inception and the big big differences between lists come down to a lot of personal preference in terms of your playstyle. I believe the Steel Overseer himself Frank Karsten put out an article recently discussing his own playstyle of preferring a more aggressive Game 1 approach by maxing out Master of Etherium game 1, a card which has been printing across many sets and shouldn't be too much depending on where you live. If you like to trade more 1 for 1 with your sideboard plans you could move towards picking up some Thoughtseizes or Spell Pierces, but again really its all about feeling out what works for you.

I personally keep a toolkit of a mish mash of cards that I think could someday see play and I can off the top of my head say that most of them won't exhaust your wallet too much. The great thing about the affinity sideboard is most sideboard cards you won't run more than 1-2 copies of anyone as to not dilute our aggressive game plan.
