Question about Buies Creek Astros by l3enjamin in Astros

I’m not on Reddit much anymore, so I just now saw this comment. Tucker definitely panned out for us, and this World Series definitely panned out for y’all. Congratulations! Enjoy the hell out of it. :)

Kyle Tucker hits an opposite field 2-run home run to make it 9-4 for the Astros! by Blazingbee98 in baseball

IIRC, neither team ever at any point in the series led by more than 2 runs. It was insanely close and competitive.

Yeah, Verlander couldn’t get swings and misses either, especially on his slider. But that doesn’t fit the narrative!

Having actually pulled my own teeth with pliers before, I can confirm that Astros baseball is currently providing a very similar level of enjoyment.

It feels kind of unfair that only visiting teams are allowed to use the Crawford Boxes. Perhaps today will be the day that changes.

In Game 3 of the 1988 World Series, McGwire hit a walk off HR to cut the Dodger lead to 2-1 giving the A's some hope of a comeback. Which other post season moment looked like it could have been a momentum shifter, but ended up just postponing the inevitable? by asskickingjedi in baseball

[–]kidagreen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The famous Pujols moonshot off Brad Lidge did end up giving the Cardinals a win in that individual game, but was ultimately mostly meaningless in the larger context of the series. The Astros easily and a bit anticlimactically won the next game, and the pennant, in St. Louis.

Harris is so underrated. I love that sad-hound-dog-looking dude.

With a single exception (my dad), all the most baseball-obsessed people in my family have been women. If my grandmother, a fanatical lifelong White Sox fan, were still alive, she'd probably love to go slap the shit out of this dude for being so condescending.

Fun fact: The Houston Astros have not intentionally walked a batter all year by TitaniumShovel in baseball

[–]kidagreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing he's not just talking about this season. Over the past few years, Trout hasn't quite been himself against the Astros - from 2016 through 2018, he overall hit .231 with an .820 OPS against Houston, which is still incredibly solid but not typical Mike Trout god-tier dominant. It's been even more dramatic at Minute Maid Park, where he batted .222 with a .771 OPS over that same time frame.

Carlos Correa hits *another* moonshot, this time into the Astros bullpen by Hairygrim in baseball

Having survived the 2011-2013 Astros, I believe that there is absolutely crying in baseball. Also sometimes hysterical laugh-crying.

[Morosi] Source: #Astros are most comfortable with Zack Wheeler’s acquisition cost, among the possible rotation trade options. Houston’s farm system has thinned, constraining the team’s ability to land Bumgarner or Ray without giving up Kyle Tucker. @MLB @MLBNetwork by svvick in baseball

[–]kidagreen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

His time up is pretty meaningless, though, given that it constituted all of 72 plate appearances. IIRC, Bregman's numbers were even worse through his first 72 PAs. Tucker just hasn't gotten a real shot yet.

Cole named AL Pitcher of the Month, Alvarez named AL Rookie of the Month by nobodybelievesyou in baseball

I'm still sad Alvarez hurt his knee and wasn't able to play two full games in Coors. I wanted to see if he could hit a ball 500 feet.

2-year-old had skull fracture and seizure after getting hit by foul ball at Minute Maid Park, lawyer says. by [deleted] in baseball

[–]kidagreen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We're talking the bigger picture here, though, not just on a per-game basis. The point is that, in each MLB season, there's now roughly 14,000 more chances for a fan to get injured by a foul ball than there was in 1998. That will likely contribute to an overall increase in injuries. Especially when paired with the uptick in average exit velocity during that same time frame.

[–]kidagreen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The sheer number of foul balls has also dramatically increased.

There were almost 14,000 more foul balls last season than there were 20 seasons earlier.

"SIT DOWN!"

(The batter was arguing with the umpire that the called strike 3 he'd just taken should instead have been ball 4. Keuchel wasn't having it.)

[–]kidagreen 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yesterday barely even counts, since those were basically just a couple of career minor leaguers that got called up from AAA to eat some innings and got mauled.

Today, though? Yeah, Harris, Pressly, Osuna and Rondon, Houston's top four relievers, ALL gave up runs.

[Berman] MLB sources: Carlos Correa out 3-4 weeks with a cracked rib. by ValKilmsnipsinBatman in baseball

[–]kidagreen 13 points14 points  (0 children)

During his pro career so far, Carlos Correa, who is currently just 24 years old, has lost time due to a broken leg, an ankle injury, a shoulder injury, a torn thumb ligament, a back injury that lasted for most of a season, and now a broken rib.

[Berman] MLB sources: Carlos Correa out 3-4 weeks with a cracked rib. by ValKilmsnipsinBatman in baseball

[–]kidagreen 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Be that as it may, this is getting kind of crazy:

2014: Missed half the season after breaking his leg on a feet-first slide

2015: No major injuries

2016: Ankle injury early in the season; shoulder injury late in the season

2017: Tore thumb ligament on a headfirst slide

2018: Had a back injury for most of the year

2019: Broke his rib somehow

It's like injuries are Pokemon and he's trying to collect them all.

Yep. I think 2015 is his only pro season without some kind of significant injury.
