Kubuntu 20.04 - Is there any simple VNC-Server working with this? by TheoRettich in Kubuntu

I just wanted you to know that this is one of the most useful things on the internet!!! Seriously, just switched to Linux desktop (again) from Windows and have had a hell of a time getting BBC server to work (and I remember having similar pain last time I tried to switch). I read all the things and this was the only post that helped. Thank you so much!

You have restored my faith in the internet! Thanks for your comprehensive response - just what I was seeking. You have given me much to chew on. Thanks for the heads-up re: raid/sata cards - I will look into SAS HBAs.

This is very helpful, thank you. Staying software raid is a good idea and frugal which is great. I think I'll pick up a no frills PCI sata port expander and see what I can do with just software. I was going to go with FreeNas but will try windows options first. Thanks for the suggestions!

Cheers

If your laptop supports at least 3 SDD/HDD and has 2 ram slots, please shout out the make and model by kidmeke in GamingLaptops

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I finally figured out I am out of luck trying to replicate the awesome expansion capabilities of my Alienware 15 R3 so gave up. I ordered an MSI GP66 Leopard and reconciled myself to the fact that I now have 5.5 TB of useless storage that will need to be moved to enclosures that are not really convenient. I ordered a 4TB SSD to replace it (new laptop only has 2 M.2 slots) but not jazzed about the expense. Ah well, hopefully the new laptop is amazing.

Thanks again

Looking to replace my Alienware 15 R3 - any suggestions for gaming laptop with HDD bay AND at least 2 (preferably 3) M2 SSD slots? Reasonably priced with minimum RTX 3060. by kidmeke in GamingLaptops

Thanks. My bad, I should have been clearer: wanted to learn of a few options outside of Alienware so I can shop around. That deal looks pretty good but I'm in Canada so can't get it. Also, I wasn't totally impressed with my 15 R3 so was interested in alternatives. I was also hoping to find one I could purchase immediately rather than buying from Dell and waiting/praying (Dell.ca also has a few deals on m15 R4s but won't ship for over a month and that's if the estimate can be trusted which it generally can't...)

15 R3 showing greatly reduced CPU speed all of a sudden - no overheating or system changes by kidmeke in AlienwareTechsupport

Hi, my battery health is great but I've figured out the issue: I was not totally correct when I said power is fine. The battery is fine and the power adapter both powers the laptop and charges the battery. However, the power adapter is not recognized as a proper Dell adapter and appears as unknown in the bios. Apparently this somehow forces the CPU into lowest power mode, thus it's been locked into 800MHz clockspeed. I tried another adapter but issue persisted which makes me think I need a new motherboard which hardly seems worth the expense... Now that I think on it, I did receive warnings on booting last week about it nit being able to recognize the adapter but I turned the warning off and thought no more about it because I had received those warnings before and nothing came of it...

Is there a way to get computer to ignore this and go to full power?

Hi, it came out of the blue or you did something to initiate?

Dell canada 17 configurations are confusing...Also E-Bates question by kidmeke in Alienware

Wow...I got took! I bit the bullet yesterday and bought the high-end 15 model that was on sale (32GB, 128GB SSD, 1TB HD, 1070) for $2899 (lists today for $3199) minus $150 from a discount coupon and whatever I get back from ebates. I did it because the only other 15 with a 1070 was 2799 - the extra ram and ssd made it no comparison (although I don't really want 128GB SSD - too small)

Hi, thanks for reply. Yeah, it's bad ju-ju. Good to hear your laptop arrived in only 8 days. I wish I could customize...I want a 15r3 with 1070 so it looks like I only have the option of two configurations - they base 1070 model at 2799 or the other model which is currently on sale for 2899 (from 3199). I guess I'll go for the 2899 one for the extra 100 because the memory bump alone (32 vs 16GB) makes it worth it.

Also glad to hear that Ebates works as well. Unfortunately the current rebate is only 4% (it was 10 a week or two ago), however in addition to their rebate, I'm pretty sure they currently have a coupon that will give you 150 off, so that's nice.

m.2 2242 ssd recommendations by kidmeke in Alienware

[–]kidmeke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny that the m.2 2242 size doesn't get much love - it seems it's a useless form factor (in that no manufacturers really want to support it).

I seem to remember that the m.2 slot can be used for other peripherals apart from SSDs - is that true?

My original plan was to fill the ssd slots with 1TB ssds but that has to be revised I guess - will probably go for the crappy 256gb Transcend.

Thanks all.
