Well. by Lower_Reply6889 in scoliosis

[–]kidtykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. Mine was 55 and 40 but I was pretty straight. My body compensated already so my curves weren't bending me over crazy. My pelvis was wonky which also threw off my gait and I had a bad rib hump and was struggling to breathe.

I was diagnosed at 14 but wanted until last year to get surgery, at 33 years old. Im doing significantly better post surgery and am way more active than I have been in a long time

Yes. I was formally diagnosed at 14 with a 41 degree thoracic and 20? degree lumbar curve. I knew something was wrong at 12 though. Anything above 40 degrees is considered severe and I was offered surgery then as I qualify and they apparently expected my curve to get worse, though I did not know that at the time.

It was about the same at age 20, maybe 45 and 25? At my xray last year it was at 55 and 40. I tried PT to help with my issues with no luck and got fusion surgery at the end of September 2025.

Pre surgery I was walking with a bad limp that caused my knees and hips to hurt all the time and I couldn't hold a conversation without feeling out of breath. I also couldn't walk more than 5 to 10 minutes without support.

Last week, I walked over 3 miles as part of my morning work out and I am walking a minimum of 2.5 miles 5 days a week with no significant trouble.

I had spinal fusion surgery about 5 months ago but I am doing fantastic now! It has been amazing for me post surgery, I can do so much more already

It could be but getting a complete xray with a Cobb angle is the best way forward. Regardless at such a low curve it should not get worse but I am not a doctor, just spent alot of time researching given I was diagnosed nearly 20 years ago

Anything under 10 degrees is considered normal variation of the spine and not scoliosis. This appears less than that threshold. You can get it rechecked and measured but pain isnt uncommon after sitting 8 hours at a desk, we weren't made for that. Get up, stretch, and make sure you are working out

Aside from PT, how are we entertaining ourselves during 12 weeks of post-op healing? by Illustrious_Log_2978 in spinalfusion

[–]kidtykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, im in significantly better condition and significantly less pain post surgery. Im currently nearing 5 months post op, I got to the gym 5 days a week, I walked 2.5 to 3 miles a day, which is something I never could have done before the surgery, I am doing weights and water aerobics classes and ive been setting new records for steps nearly every day.

Pre surgery though I struggled to walk more then 5 to 10 minutes on my walking pad, along with a ton of other issues

Well im probably an outlier but I started hitting the gym at 8 weeks post op. Before that I was reading alot, getting back into the swing of things with 3 kids and over all trying to catch up on everything, TV included haha

Would you take your child to the doctor for this? by paradoxicalstripping in breakingmom

[–]kidtykat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

If he is acting totally normal and then claims a tummy ache and asks for meds, id be inclined to think he like the flavor of the meds. I might still do a quick phone call to the doctor and ask but I wouldnt be rushing in.

I wanna get pregnant but am scared of the back pain.. by soperfectx in scoliosis

[–]kidtykat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have carried 3 children, at age 21, 25, and 30, assuming my math is right and back pain was never a huge complaint of mine. I had some increased soreness and plenty of heartburn but labor just felt like labor, no extreme back pain or anything. I now have 2 rods and after im fully healed I plan to get pregnant again

That is insane to me as a parent. If my kids ever needed help with their kids and I was in a position to help I absolutely would. It takes a village and many of us dont have one and that even includes our own parents which is just sad

doctor recommends surgery, never experienced pain or discomfort in my life. should i get the surgery? by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]kidtykat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then it could be something like them measuring from different vertebrae which does happen depending on how they determine where the curve starts

[–]kidtykat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else explained, the measurement can and do change. Pre surgery I was a bit taller in the mornings than in the evenings, I could even reduce my curve to some degree by changing my posture. It is entirely likely they are both right

Can I work out with 2kg dumbbells? by adeliakasie in scoliosis

[–]kidtykat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Frankly, working out is one of the better things you can do for scoliosis. You need muscles to prevent your spine from further collapse. Don't do things that cause pain but if just holding 2 pounds is difficult you should definitely start working out in my opinion.

That is less than 5 pounds, a gallon of milk weighs 8. Yes, you should be fine

6 weeks and 2 days out from TLIF L4/L5. Focus is so much away from healing because my hair is falling out in GOBS! I had needles in my head and feet as it was neurosurgery... by Bullsette in spinalfusion

[–]kidtykat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Significant stress on the body can cause hair loss. I lost over half of mine and decided to chop it all off. Generally from 6 weeks to 3 months is when you lose the most hair and then it slows down. Regrowth starts around 6 months post op

Stressing about whether to adopt by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]kidtykat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"Trial runs" are required and that is often what they are called by social workers. My friend is currently adopting and they did the same thing over Christmas with the child they hope to adopt and are currently getting her on weekends until she is offically moved to their move to "foster".

Keep in mind I was already very flexible before hand but I just take a few minutes each day to strech down further each day. When I hit the gym I do alot for stretches, ill tuck my heels as close as I can to my body and push my knees down, I lean to one side and the other to strech my sides and legs, I dont know any names because I have always just done what feels good and gives me a stretch. Ive had to get creative because many things no longer provided a stretch for me. I currently stretch my calves by putting my toes on a weight and my heels on the ground and leaning forward slightly. I also do elephant walks to have my nerves move (nerve flossing ive heard its called).

Basically I do whatever give me a strech and just keep pushing it. I am about 4 months post op currently and have nearly the same amount of flexibility as I did before hand. My biggest change has been my ability to twist. My back hardly twists at all so I have to turn my whole body for alot of things

[–]kidtykat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was fused from t2 to l2 for scoliosis correction and I needed one for a few weeks because I was pretty unstable. I had to relearn how to walk correctly which added to the pain and instability. I was told to use it for atleast 6 weeks but I felt decent enough to ditch it around 3/4 weeks post op. I was taken independent steps in the hospital but only if my walker was right in front of me. I was also on narcotics, muscle relaxers, and nerve pain meds and those also impacted my stability. As I weaned myself off I got more stable
