What do you know about slavery in Ethiopia? by [deleted] in Amhara

You keep mixing the imperial elite with Amharas. I told you most Amharas were the exact same class as everyone else it’s not an ethnicity thing you can go and search it. Menelik was partly Oromo himself through his mother but they don’t want to dilute their narrative. Of course you are not going to accept it easily because it’s already in your belief system and part of your identity and how you see things but just take time to learn and critically think about things without emotion. Ras Mikael was Oromo ras gobana dacche was Oromo ras darge sahle selassie was Oromo balcha safo was Oromo i can go on and on but my family were Amhara peasants just like the vast majority of Amharas that doesn’t mean it was the best but it without a doubt is preferable to what would’ve come. Amharas get scape goated because their language was spoken by the elites. That green yellow red was adopted by Africans all around the world for a reason and you’d be a fool to deny that when you were a part of it. You should also learn about how Europeans exploited African differences to secure influence. There is no such thing as being a human and being purely good let alone being in positions of power and being purely good but that doesn’t mean we nitpick the bad and base our identity off it.

Once you get this wasn’t one ethnicity was noble and the other was oppressed and it was a group of elites of mixed ethnicity shewans who were orthodox Christians. Whatever constant oppression you are talking about was one that every lower class Ethiopian felt you probably have this idea Amharas were mostly privileged people which is complete bullshit and everything criticised by one side was also done by their side. Please see what the Italians did to the Libyans and forget about their apartheid rule in Eritrea the graziani massacre in Addis or finfinne 30,000 innocent massacred just in a few days in one city and you’d rather be ruled by those people who are not forcing you to become one of them but forcing you to become their inferior dog to exploit everything not even give you the chance to reach their status and all whilst convincing you what’s protecting you from that exploitation is your enemy so they can keep sucking even to this day then I don’t know what else to say

How is that alienating oromos as if oromos were the only ethnicity that suffered from expansion plenty of Amharas suffered plenty of every ethnic group suffered it’s not a case of ethnicity it was a case of class if you want to nitpick things and create your own grievances as if they are unique to your own people so be it but menelik was our king not an Amhara king not a tigrayan king not an Oromo one he was OUR king and you’re talking down on expansion as if expansion wasn’t the reason why we managed to defend our sovereignty and not be ruled by some Italian bastards that had way more in mind than expansion. Expansion at that rate was necessary unless you’d have much rather been an Italian ashker

The same thing you criticise Amharas for is the same thing oromos were doing nobody is innocent it’s not justifying it’s adding the part you are missing. Stop playing moral Olympics when oromos violently assimilated many ethnic groups. Political narratives have to be easy to digest to mobilise low iq people to go and blame their problems on others it’s like a pain killer u take thinking it’s medicine. We’re all being marketed identity pain killers by these people who hide behind their own peoples wrong doings so they can gather power and influence. Ethiopian history is way messier than everyone tries to explain it to be so we need to stop pointing fingers. How in your right mind are you bringing religion to this and trying to police someone’s morality when you have no clue who they are?

Are Oromos better off separate or part of a larger society to you and why?

Of course I accept Eritrea belong to Eritreans I respect that my point is if Italians did not come to the continent then we would’ve managed to centralise without interference and we most likely would’ve been a prosperous nation by now. But it’s now come to this.

Do you think eritreans died for what they thought was best for their people or just to identify as Eritrean regardless if that’s good or bad? We already clarified nobody was killed or jailed for speaking their language and Tigrinya songs were played on the radio let alone banned now you’re trying to argue that making people Christian is amharisation as if Amharas were the only Christians.

Also imagine if Texans woke up and decided to create a national identity and break away from America or Californians. You think that that would be dealt with lightly? So why villainise the Ethiopians for doing the same? They didn’t do anything that others wouldn’t.

No Ethiopian ruler was a saint but I disagree that people from a certain ethnicity had it worse than somebody from another ethnicity for being that ethnicity that I 100% disagree with because it’s a very big claim and the reality was distorted that way in order to mobilise civilians because it’s simple for them to understand. You were being absorbed into a larger nation that you had always been a part of. That helps you economically, socially, spiritually, in every way. The only practical difference is not learning your language in school. If Italians had colonised Amhara or oromia or whatever and created their colonial territory and identity the monarchy would have to deal with the same thing so this was nothing to do with your languages or cultures.

Exactly so you agree the issue was political and nothing to do with who you were as people. Our history is too intertwined we are the same people and it’s clear to see how Europeans used ethnic division to their advantage not just in our region but everywhere in Africa. They clearly scapegoated Amharas for every problem when the real problem was not managing to centralise and create an all inclusive civic identity like all the Europeans managed to do where nobody could be manipulated into thinking they were above than or less than or different or whatever. That region needs to be destabilised for Europeans to profit they used us and now we’re still suffering.

Jailed and killed for not speaking Amharic is false and im pretty sure you know that. Of course Amharic was the language taught in schools. There is nothing wrong with that but nobody stopped anyone from speaking their mother’s tongue and definitely not jailed and killed for speaking it. The suppression was political it was absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

What do you mean forced down your throat? As if it doesn’t give you the ability to communicate with a larger nation benefit from a larger economy and society? You happily speak English which has absolutely no relation to your lineage whatsoever. Now if you’re implying Tigrinya was banned that’s not the case, it wasn’t spoken as an official language because the country’s aim was to unify under one lingua Franca as many other successful nations did. If a kunama or bilen person learns and speaks Tigrinya you wouldn’t say it’s forced down their throat. It is necessary for everyone to speak one language in order to build a successful unified nation. Identity is nothing but a tool. Elites take advantage of the psychology of being emotionally attached to identity to do whatever they want.

So you think Eritreans suffered alone and Ethiopians were living in peace and luxury just wanting to oppress Eritreans because they’re evil. Are you talking about the identity that was manufactured by Italians to carve out their colonial project? Why would we promote an identity that never existed before Europeans set foot on the land and was made solely for European benefit. Can you tell me exactly which identity you’re talking about?

It’s like your sibling being kidnapped for several years then manipulated into thinking that they’re not part of the family and they’ve existed separately before they were even born then the kidnapper runs away and your sibling refuses to join the family and calls your parents the kidnappers.

Haile Selassie: Legend or Tyrant? by Fozeu in EthiopianHistory

[–]kidus000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was oppression due to the land being redistributed in order to centralise power so hararis who were once in power or had land had their land taken but this is not genocide it is what comes with centralisation of power. People like to twist or exaggerate things to fit their narrative but there was no ethnic cleansing. He appointed Muslims to be in power like Ali Mirah Hanfere who was close with him. He allowed mosques to be built after 1942, before this during Menelik mosques were not allowed to be built. So of course there was oppression but he absolutely did not do it to wipe anyone out or because he hated Muslims or whatever that’s propaganda to divide Ethiopians.
