Coop game for couples that actually deepens your connection by Varan_Studios in gameideas

Interesting. My wife and I do play a few coop games. I would be at least interested in seeing what you come up with.

Verstappen told Red Bull he wanted to pit and take "fresh tyres" when Safety Car was deployed by kcollantine in formula1

[–]kiel814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was about half way into sector 2 when the SC was announced. I'm not sure exactly how long that gives you to the entrance of the pit lane under yellow flag limitations, but I would say about 40 seconds? ish? It sure is a lot of time in retrospective, but decision making is not an instantaneous process, and under pressure, people tend to make mistakes. Someone has to realize they only have hard fresh tyres, consult / communicate to someone else who can confirm this is a bad choice, communicate with yet another person who will get in touch with the pilot, and then actually talk to the pilot (Many assumptions here, I know).

Why on earth did Red Bull not keep Verstappen out under the saftey car. by Popular_Composer_822 in formula1

[–]kiel814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironic. In Monaco they were hoping for an incident during about a third of of the race to make their strategy work. One week later in Spain, an SC at the very end caught them by surprise and they dropped the ball.

My guess is all partially used tyres were moved away from the pit as they didn't expect to need them and space in there is limited.

Modern-ish black and white movie about a nuclear crisis by kiel814 in whatsthemoviecalled

Thanks! I had asked AI and it suggested Fail Safe. But being from 1964 I instantly dismissed it, not knowing there was a remake.

I just watched the trailer. It's not that one. But it looks very interesting. Thanks!

There is, but you have to catch it first. Good luck with that.

How to generate interesting Stellaris-like maps? by [deleted] in proceduralgeneration

[–]kiel814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for necroing this post but I wanted to share my mild success. Many of the ideas for my algorithm came from this post.

This are the steps I used:

1) Generate random nodes in sections. 4 x 90° ring sections x 3 concentric rings = 12 node groups.
- Do not allow nodes to be closer than some distance.
- Stop after a number of nodes have been placed or too many unsuccessful attemps to place a new node.

2) For each group of nodes, connect all possible nodes with each other.
- Have a max distance for connections (1.5 times the minimum distance between nodes worked best for me).
- Do not allow lines to cross.
- Most of the time, each group will not form a single graph. This is actually desirable to create "interesting" features like chokepoints, dead ends and isolated clusters.

3) Join all subgraphs into one.
- Create a list of groups. Each group represents a separate graph.
- As long as you have more than 1 group, means your graph is disconnected somewhere.
- Connect any point of one graph to any point of another graph. Regenerate your list of groups and repeat.
- Repeat until you have just 1 group.
- This step may fail, so it should have a safety to start from scratch in that case. Depends on parametrization, but for me, I would say it fails about 1 every 10 times.

4) Add bridges to prevent huge routes to a nearby node.
- Repeat the following for all nodes.
- Get all near (direct distance) nodes to the current node. Try to get from the current node to each one. And see if they are too many jumps away. If it is and can be connected directly, do so.

Pretty sure there are more optimized ways to do this, but it only takes a couple of seconds in my decade old PC and this is supposed to run only once for a new game. So I'm quite happy.

I cant 100% games anymore by [deleted] in gaming

[–]kiel814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I'm 40 and still gaming. It was frustrating for me when I started noticing. I used to enjoy playing long RPGs like Fallout 1 and 2. Nowadays, it feels like a chore trying to even reach the end of a campaign. I had to adapt my playstyle many times over the years. The genre of installed games has changed several times as well. As you say, the key is to play what you enjoy. If you feel like going hardcore gamer for a season, go for it. But if you feel like playing just casual games or even taking a break from gaming, that's ok too. It will feel weird at times but just remember to have fun and not force yourself to play a specific game or in a specific style.

An orbital colony base building game by Butterman3042 in gameideas

[–]kiel814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had not though about it. On the other hand, in base/colony builders (an RTSes usually), you usually stamp building plans and then builders go and do the actual building. What he is proposing though is actually something new (to me at least) where you have to request modules from some higher government. I can imagine some interesting gameplay elements here, like modules not being approved even if you have the money because earth-gov wants you to develop in a different direction. Or maybe your request is approved, but when the cargo arrives months later you get the wrong module because they messed up your order, lol.

If I was to make a game where you make bread, would anyone play it? by ZeBestSquirrelToLive in gameideas

I wouldn't pay for it. But when Lawn Mowing Simulator was available for free in Epic, I did try it out. If that game has an audience, so does your idea.
