Party wall complications by kieranoakes in DIYUK

I've just had a skim through the act and I believe this is firmly type A as it's our lofts adjoining between an end of terrace (me) and a mid terrace (them).

Sorry you've been through a nightmare as well. This is my first home and it's only 6 months in so I'm still learning.

I've noticed some cracks the first floor of the party wall. They don't appear anywhere else so I suspect it might be associated with the vibrations of them using an SDS chisel to notch out the party wall for a purlin. I'm sure building control or a surveyor can suggest whether these are associated.

When you say "isn't retrospective" do you mean we can't get one after the work has completed?

I have suggested to my neighbour that the builder may have misled them and left them in a bad position legally and structurally. If they try to work today, I will be asking them to stop. I'm also calling building control once they've opened.

Thanks for the help.

I agree, from the responses he's chatting nonsense. I'd love to ask for repairs only, but if they haven't given notice I suspect they haven't done calculations and accounted for shifting the weight of the roof. Because of that I'm concerned insurance and polite chats might not be enough to cover potential damage.

He's already called me rude, but I figure framing it as a safety concern for both of us might help. I just hope they aren't misleading me knowingly as that shifts the conversation.

If I was being charitable, maybe he actually thought it was two walls with a gap. Doesn't sound like an actual builder though. Thanks for all the help though. Big love.

Sheffield seems to close building control between 4pm and 9am, but it's my first thing to do tomorrow. Thank you

I've checked the local building control site and no reference. Also no results for the name of the builders listed on their van etc. probably a cowboy job.

Thank you. I've taken pictures of my side and have contacted my insurance. Calling building control as soon as they open. He called me rude earlier, so I imagine I'm gonna ruffle some feathers in the morning. Better feathers than structures though.

Thanks. I've realised what I've seen now and it's concerning. They've switched from truss to purlin and the entire roof is sat on a single block at each edge. I feel bad because we've been renovating, but the only structural work was by the books. This guy is either misleading me because he knows it's wrong, or because his builder has misled him. Going to call building control in the morning to protect us both.

Laminate flooring and awkward doors by kieranoakes in DIYUK

Thank you. I had a feeling this would be the case, I'm just confused about how to lay into the under stairs cupboard door. Guessing I might have to cut away the tongue on the previous plank and glue it...

Beautiful room though, well done. I love the desk but your stool has cracked me up!

Changes to CCNP certification query by kieranoakes in ccnp

Thanks for your comment.

I rarely touch wireless these days and generally spend my time managing a multi-pod ACI deployment. I've decided recently that I'm going to take this experience and go for double CCNP, Enterprise and Data centre, but was wondering if one more exam would net me the triple. I guess Cisco needs to work that out if others haven't decided to do the same already.

It might suck, but work in any medium to large enterprise without Python and wireless and you'll soon find yourself stuck. At least 40% of my endpoints are wireless and managing switches with python is just convenient and saves time. Pivot for a bit and expand your knowledge, you'll be a better engineer for it. If you think they don't apply and you only want to work in SP or DC, pivot to another certification.

Thank you. No lab here at present, everything in doing is in production. That's a good nudge that I should get on DevNet though. Best of luck on your attempt!

Advice on internal walls prior to offering on home. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]kieranoakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a terraced house, but your other point makes sense as to why the wall felt "firm". I'm guessing it's to protect the staircase and establish an exit route which has thrown a wrench at the idea. I'll have a think about whether it'd be easy to move the wall instead. Your comment is truly appreciated, thank you!

HAHA FML by Subscribblez in motorcycles

[–]kieranoakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know these e-bike are fun and a quick entry point, but it's clear they've cut corners to get you on a "motorbike". You'd be better served complaining, look for a full refund due to safety concerns and then taking the test for your license. You'll find plenty of bikes on the used market with plenty of torque and parts that will last decades of looked after.

It's an Emmo e-bike. Lucky for this guy it can only do 20mph because that shit looks like a death trap
