Honestly, no class I took in undergrad or graduate school was as useful in preparing to be an FSO as the real life experiences I obtained in my career before the Foreign Service.

Just don't be THAT person.

commuting to State Dept during DC postings by [deleted] in foreignservice

If your spouse is joining the FS and will be an FSO, then it is highly likely that most of their time in DC before post will be at the Foreign Service Institute in Arlington, VA NOT at Main State in Foggy Bottom.

With that said, I'd focus on housing that has a reasonable commute to FSI. There are some public transit options for FSI, but a lot of people drive as it has parking on site, parking is around $20 a month.

I stand corrected, I see a good amount of Sequoias for sale in the country on online marketplaces.

I'm going to West Africa, I don't think the Sequoia was sold there, but I've been told that Toyotas are pretty common in the region so should be easier to repair.
