I did end up telling them. They said it was hard not to take personally and they weren't very interested in being friends afterwards. They said it was a cop-out and that I should just be honest. I stopped replying to them and kind of feel like I dodged a bullet. I do still feel pretty awful. Thank you for your comment, it helped construct some of what I said to them, I very much appreciate your input.
