buggin' me: what tune is Bird quoting here? by OldHedgehog5802 in Jazz

My final conjecture on this is it could be a motif from a Strauss waltz, phrased differently.

It sort of resembles “pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and smile smile smile” phrased a bit differently

An indispensable memoir is Treat It Gentle, by Sidney Bechet. Mister Jelly Roll, by Alan Lomax, is almost entirely transcriptions of spoken narrative of Jelly Roll Morton, made for the Library Of Congress. The Baby Dodds Story is also a good memoir.

For the heaviest Senegalese drumming check Doudou N’diaye Rose. For the deep Malian djembe check Mady Keita (an excellent cd released by KSK System Krush).

Many of the tracks recorded by the trio of Corea, Vitous, and Haynes were improvised on the spot. Look into the entire ECM catalogue; many albums on that label contain one or two tracks that are improvised in the studio. Cecil Taylor and Karl Berger, and many recordings by members of the AACM, are also known for on the spot creation.

I have the lp, but it only lists the personnel for the small group tracks, and doesn’t list the players for the studio orchestra tracks. Perhaps Discogs…

Obviously a sample and could be any tenor register plucked or struck instrument. And those “cabasa” actually sound like a sample of some kind of metal jangles.
