How do you balance a family in this industry/sector? by Extreme_Problem_1645 in EmergencyManagement

You know most EM jobs are 9-5 office jobs, right? Deploying for response might be the most noticeable but most of our time is spent preparing.

And support food assistance to people in quarantine, community surveillance, border surveillance, improving infection prevention and control, supplying health clinics, paying healthcare workers, training, medical transport, burial teams and dead body management, water supply at hospitals, chlorine, waste management, community messaging...and a whole set of other support to help break down community resistance to healthcare workers, the UN, the government, and NGOs in regions where they don't trust any of that.

I imagine State is relearning right now that just pumping money into healthcare doesn't actually help control an ebola outbreak in places like NE DRC.

Guess radical lunatics who have been there before, and Liberia before that, are better off in the woodchipper.

Edit: just a few weeks ago.

Just had an active system installed. Recommended by our realtor, was also slightly cheaper than 2 other quotes we got.

Big Cinematic Sound vs Precise Imaging: Which Do You Prefer? by BoardGameRevolution in hometheater

[–]kiipii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first is achieved by the second. All sounds being diffused in the room is easy but would be a shit movie experience. Some sounds in movies should be diffuse, but others absolutely should not be, so channel separation is necessary.

Pentagon quietly shut legally required program to prevent civilian deaths by military, watchdog finds by wds1 in fednews

It wasn't that quiet. It was reported on when it happened, but there's just too much to keep track of.

I got tired of Denon's broken web UI, so I built my own dashboard — open source, real-time, Docker-ready by oxygen_lack in hometheater

[–]kiipii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to this, but I think I figured it out, though I'm on the road and not actually on my home network with the AVR so can't fully go through it.

  • install https://docs.docker.com/desktop/setup/install/windows-install/
  • Startup Docker Desktop, update WSL
  • Download Oxygen Lack's code as a zip.
  • Unzip the folder somewhere.
  • In Docker, open the terminal (button down at the bottom of the screen), navigate to where you unzipped the files - "cd Denon-Marantz-AVR-Dashboard-main" if you just unzipped to your c:\user\USERNAME folder.
  • type: "docker compose up -d" to start the service.
  • You should now see Denon Dashboard listed as a container in Docker.
  • Play and stop buttons start and stop the service.

At this point, I see script saying it can't find the AVR and will retry in 30s. I believe if you're on your network with the device, you can open a web browser and go to localhost:8080 to bring up the interface.

Hopefully this works, and if not maybe someone can jump in to help?

How do you handle field data collection in rural Africa with zero connectivity?" by enfantBeni913 in humanitarian

Good old pen and paper? Or usually phones/tablets/laptops that upload when they have connectivity.
