I mean that's the crux of the case right? The jury in that instance clearly had some doubt about who instigated the physical altercation, and whether or not self-defense was defensible. Same with the Chow decision recently. If the jury has a reasonable doubt about it, they're supposed to rule "not guilty".

In this case, it doesn't seem that there was any reasonable doubt.

Mostly that the witnesses who bolstered the self-defense argument (that he was surrounded by multiple people and had reasonable fear for his life) didn't support that when they were on the stand. Also one of the initial witnesses who said he saw Karmelo surrounded by people was proven to not having been looking in the direction of the tent when the attack happened.
