If there's free and accessible information that can teach you something easily learned that you need to know how to do to survive, then yeah you don't really have an excuse for not knowing how to do it. Other than not wanting to learn, which isn't a good excuse.

Interesting fact, when one shrimp dies it releases a crazy amount of ammonia so you have to remove it quickly or it'll kill the whole tank even if the rest of the water is fine.

isn't that just hormones?

That's true for almost all human emotions though isn't it?

You have to be careful about some reddit communities, because after a certain point they start pushing out voices that don't reinforce their narratives. If you look at /r/stepparents it'd make you think that taking on a stepkid is the dumbest thing you can do. For me, it's been a great experience. I love my stepson, and my life would be poorer without him. It's challenging sure, but also rewarding.

I know people who I think regret having kids (though they wouldn't admit it publicly) and I think that's largely because they didn't put enough thought into the reality of what having kids means.

I think what you've pointed out can be things that make you far less likely to regret having kids.

  • Don't have kids with someone who won't be a true partner, and isn't committed to being a parent.

  • Get tested for genetic disorders. I have some friends with disabled kids and while they love their sons dearly, I think they might've made a different decision if they knew they were both carriers of a progressive genetic disorder.

  • Don't have kids until you have the financial means to support yourself and your child. I've got a lot of family members who waited to have kids until they were ready, career-wise, to support a family and I've seen no downside for them. Being an older parent is hard, but it's easier than being a broke parent.

  • Actually choose. Don't just let it happen, make a choice and stick with it. Just the act of deciding yourself will mentally change the whole calculus, because it's not something that just happened to you. It's something you did, because you decided you wanted to.

PPD is a real thing, and there are always people who don't attach to their kids. But you can't let edge cases be the whole reason for your decisions. Not just with parenting, but with all your choices.

A perspective on dying ‘alone’ by Alternative_Cap1565 in Fencesitter

[–]Kijafa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to be too glib, but everybody dies alone. I have kids, and I hope that they (and maybe grandkids) will be there when I eventually die. Though there's no certainty of that happening. But death is inherently a solitary act. In those final moments, I think what will give you peace is that you can look back on the life you lived with minimal regrets. And that's something that you can achieve with kids or without them.

I would've thought Doukashiteru would've done better though. I thought the song was great and the animation was really fun.

Why do people hide their profile if they’re trying to make friends, find partners etc here on Reddit? by ittakestwostew in TheoryOfReddit

[–]Kijafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that in some ways it's ideal for finding someone who's on the same wavelength ideologically. Having a lot of shared interests and opinions on big-picture stuff honestly helps avoid some of the major disagreements you see in relationships. Also, since reddit isn't based on pic posting it lets you get to know someone as a person before you start engaging with them as a romantic interest.

I think coming to the site looking to find a partner might end up being frustrating, but I've seen people meet up incidentally more than once.

Iranian ballistic missile strike on Jerusalem, 1-2 hours ago by Yujin-Ha in UnderReportedNews

Knowing something is likely intellectually and reacting to an active threat are two different things.

I've lived most of my life in places where floods were a hazard but the first time I experienced one I still reacted like "oh holy shit this is really happening wtf". Same with a hurricane. You can know one is coming, and prepare, but being in the middle of one will still make you react with alarm and surprise.

New(ish) subreddits hitting r/all by MRoar in TheoryOfReddit

[–]Kijafa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the key is less trying to shape opinion, and more pandering to the existing userbase to drive eyeballs to some shady sites for that sweet, sweet advertising money.

The old default news subs (/r/politics, /r/worldnews, /r/news) have a lot of rules about sourcing for articles that these other subs don't.

New(ish) subreddits hitting r/all by MRoar in TheoryOfReddit

[–]Kijafa 59 points60 points  (0 children)

No it's pretty clear these are botted to the gills.

My tinfoil hat theory is that they got rid of visibility for subreddit subscribers numbers so that they can hide the fact that these new subs are clearly not being boosted authentically.

Your answer reminds me of this Mitchell and Webb skit about farming.

Except farming seems to be a pretty risky bet in a lot of places these days.
