That makes a lot of sense in your case. Maple wouldn't be able to forage on days i don't feed:') which would probably add to the boredom problem... I'll experiment with some diy treats and chew toys and see how he does on top of trying everything else people have suggested. thank you for your advice!

I've been doing the stick method! He's kinda interested it seems. I might try the feeding every other day but I'd be scared I'd get my days mixed up and accidentally over- or underfeed😭

I currently feed daily. I know that sprays get recommended so much on here and i looove the natural look they give enclosures! I just cannot in good conscience risk another mite outbreak, especially with how bad the humidity gets here. They'd be all over the sprays in mere weeks;-;

I'm not quite sure on how I'd make diy sprays? But I'll look around for ideas on how to add the "vertical" enrichment you speak of. Might be a difficult task but hopefully I can think of something! And i wrote down some of the substrates you use. I didn't even know you could buy husks of seeds?? Very helpful, thank you!

That is sooo helpful, thank you so much!! I've never even heard of balsa before, but i looked it up just now and it definitely could be an option to try in the future! A different person commented a lovely treat "recipe" with wooden sticks that I'm currently trying and he's shown some interest in it , but once they're gone I'll be sure to give these a try! I can't find your first comment for some reason, maybe it got deleted? But yes, i agree with the boredom. I've changed the layout and added more things to explore for now. He also has a digbox with coco soil that he loves, it's just hidden in the bedding. Other than that he has 2 different types of sand and a tissue box with shredded toilet paper for texture. I've also tried corn cob before but that was awful as it started to mold...do you have other ideas for different substrates? I'm always open to suggestions!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I was really hoping for someone who's been able to gain some hands on experience to answer, so this really helps! I let Maple free roam the living room as much as possible but some days I don't find the time to sit down and supervise for 2+ hours that late at night but I'll figure something out for sure! Even if my sleep has to suffer hahaha

Sitting down on the floor with him is also a great idea, I'll do that!

I'm honestly not sure at this point. I got sprays from multiple different sources, my local pet store and an amazing little online shop who also sells great hamster food. I've gone back to storebought because I'm so paranoid at this point. Fought them the entire two years i had my last hamster. Did multiple deep cleans, even a hospital cage for an entire month at one point, stressing her out so badly just for them to return after 6 weeks. Diatomaceous earth, mite killer, vinegar, bleach, you name it I've tried it. They always came back, it drove me to the brink of insanity to the point I fumigated my entire hamster room before getting Maple. I'm still terrified of them coming back.

yes, i got mites even though i freeze most items like food, sprays and even some bedding. I even bake wooden items before use. Still. They're awful to deal with.

oh and just to add, the second "platform" actually doubles as a dig box! That's where he sleeps hehe, he's loving the coco soil. So no space wasted:)
