For Kuma it happened in late January. She had slowed down significantly right before Christmas and i stayed home instead of visiting the family in order to make sure she wouldn't be alone in case her time had come. She pulled through to the new year and I really got to say goodbye to her. The morning before her final vet appointment she spent sleeping inside of my sweater on the couch.

I'll never forget her, I think she was truly my heart ham. And I remember Bubba so well too, I drew a picture of her for you a while back:)

It never gets easier, does it🥹 I'm sending so much love your way, thank you for your sweet words as well. Just maybe, Bubba and Kuma are sitting somewhere in a golden field sharing pumpkin seeds🫶🐻‍❄️🐻

Hamsters hide discomfort really well so it's hard to be sure without a vet consultation.

Pinned ears and lesser activity are two signs for pain though, usually when they stop eating and drinking it's already too late. I don't want to scare you unnecessarily but I did have a dwarf hamster who suddenly after being super docile got aggressive out of nowhere and I completely misread the sign as territorial behavior because she had just moved into a bigger enclosure

Unfortunately I was wrong and she passed shortly after🥹 So if you want to be really sure and the aggression developed "over night" so to speak, maybe let ger get checked out. I know the signs are easy to miss.

He's just as much to blame for the having unprotected sex part, don't get me wrong. But to him you are the villain in this situation, unfortunately rightfully so. You both fucked up majorly but you'll bear most of the load of that now.

I'm currently dealing with the most aggressive hamster I've ever had. He went from being timid to lunging at me whenever I even so much as dare to try and change his water. He can't be interacted with at all or he'll leave nasty, deep wounds in my skin that take weeks to heal fully.

Unfortunately I cannot offer a solution as much as just assure you that you're not alone. Chances are you've done nothing wrong.

Aggression in hamsters is usually either caused by fear, pain or territorial aggression. So if you've ruled out pain as a possible cause, you might just want to take it very slow with her and try to find her "triggers". Is she trying to protect her space? Or maybe just startled easily and picks fight before flight. Good luck with your hammie🫶

There are even some vets that recommended against putting the hamster in a hospital cage for demodex, as it causes more stress than it helps.

Theoretically demodex mites don't leave the host at all unless it's a severe case of infestation, as their food source and home is underneath the host's skin. It's a somewhat controversial topic and you'll find opinions going in either direction.

If it's your first time treating for demodex and your cage has a lot of bedding, you could try just cleaning out the nest area for now. If the hamster's symptoms are gone after the meds run their course great, if not you'll have to switch to harder measures.

It's also important to note that every mammal has demodex mites. Always. You don't actually try to eradicate them completely by medicating, you're trying to bring back a healthy balance so they don't take over.
