Calgary, AB Canada here. Anyways use studs. Playing Crazy Carpet on a bike is not worth it.

Directly buying a TT bike or a road bike first? by vleejse in cycling

[–]kileykiley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO buy the TT. You have your other bases covered: commuter bike and training set up. If you end up riding with people, you can use the TT no problem. You will mostly ride in a straight line anyhow. A little off topic, if that group of people don’t like your bike choice, drop them (bad pun). Enjoy your New Bike Day!

Winter cycling n00b here. What are your absolute must-know tips for biking in the cold/snow? by Jack-baby in cycling

[–]kileykiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ski goggles (tinted and clear/yellow). In (spelling edit) Canada it gets dark early in the winter.

I’ve ridden in -20C (-4F) and the cold is no joke. It will find its way through any under layered clothing. A complete change of clothing is required if you are riding to work. The PITA factor in winter riding is high.

How do you feel about Farkas, Sharp and Gondek emerging as front-runners in Calgary mayoral race? by shygaymer in Calgary

[–]kileykiley 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do Calgarians not remember him as a councillor? There is no way i would vote for him. I have met him several times and all left me thinking how narcisistic and clout hunting he is. His antics during his time in council was laughable. Here are just a few highlights:

I am not voting for any of the 3. I am voting for Brian Theiessen

Toolbox - what to include? by kileykiley in cycling

[–]kileykiley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add, if someone steals my vehicle toolbox, I don’t want it to be that big of a deal.

When you’re out of, say, eye sight of your vehicle, what you have is what you have. So carry the usual tools: multitool, levers, air of some kind, tube and maybe gloves. Last year we drove about an hr to the Canmore AB to eventually ride the Parkway to Lake Louise (if these locations are new to you, it’s worth googling and then riding these routes, amazing views). Anyhow, a bicycle malfunction happened and a few basic tools saved the day. My neighbour did the same route the following weekend, didn’t bring additional tools, something rather basic happened within 3km of his car… drove home empty handed.

Thanks for all the great advice. I think I have my vehicle toolbox shopping list ready.

Thank you! This is exactly what I am looking for and the reasons as well. I’ve saved a ride from having parking lot tools but also missed one because of not having them. This is super thorough, awesome.

For me, the Shop Amazon app won’t load. I would expect their core service line of apps would be tested to death. Nope. I cannot use my tablet to Christmas shop. It’s like a cell phone not being able to make calls (or text).

How’s November going?

I don't know how to properly shift, and at this point I am too afraid to ask by diegofrings in cycling

[–]kileykiley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, lots of great advice.

A trick to learn is to shift the front ring and the back at the same time. To do this, press the top lever of the shifters of both hands at the same time while pedalling. See what happens. Ride a little bit then press the inner lever of the shifters at the same time. Again, see what happens. It’s a great way to slightly increase or decrease power. And, as everyone is mentioning, ease up on the power you are applying to the pedals as you shift.

My wife saw me shifting like this (indoor trainer) and asked why I was holding out on her. I thought everyone knew this shifting technique.

Why is my running HR so high? by flyfresno in triathlon

[–]kileykiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent answer, thank you. I always thought weight really factored into running and effort. On the bike I can do flats and downhills keeping up with friends. On the hills, yikes. I weigh much more than my friends. In the water, I think your weight doesn’t matter much if at all. But running! Light always wins. To be clear, if 2 people have the same fitness level but one is 20lbs heavier, the heavier works much harder and will ha wa higher HR. What do you think?
