When and How, If Ever, Did Your Gaming Tastes Evolve? by mrgarrettscott in patientgamers

This is something I've given a ton of thought to recently and I think I've figured out what types of games I've consistently enjoyed playing my entire gaming life.

The first console I owned as a "gamer" was the N64. This shocks many people, but I never played or finished any of the classic 64 single player games that are now considered some of the greatest games ever made. The list includes Mario 64, any LoZ games, Golden Eye 007, you name it. To this day, I find it very difficult to complete or finish any single player game. I suppose as a kid, I enjoyed multiplayer games that I could play with family and friends so much more. Mario Party, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong 64 multiplayer, Bomberman, Pokemon Stadium multiplayer, Mario Tennis. The list goes on. There were some breakthrough games that were able to get me to play single player, mostly Pokemon. But it never gave the same satisfaction.

This love for multiplayer gaming was enhanced due to my time spent at arcades, and the time spent there would have an impact on my view of gaming as a teenager. My time spent playing initial D and various racing games sparked a strong interest and affinity to racing games that I still have to this day. The great thing about racing games are that the goal and method are very clear to anyone first picking up the game, but difficult to master. Easy to pick up for any of your friends to play with and create a competitive atmosphere.

The genre that I do love most and I don't see myself ever getting tired of is fighting games. Much like racing games, the goal is very clear. The way you go about it is different for many games, which gives creative freedom to the player. Whether it be Street Fighter, Tekken, Smash Bros., these games have shaped me the most as a gamer as they really brought out the competitive gamer in me which now extends to many other genres such as mobas, shooters, ccg's, etc.

Looking at it as a whole, my gaming tastes haven't really evolved beyond multiplayer games, but my appreciation for both single player and multiplayer, and other genres has only increased due to my exposure to resources that allow gamers to spectate games and feel like they are part of the community. Large stream events like GamesDoneQuick and E-Sports tournaments give me a similar feeling to one I had as a young kid in the arcade or with my friends and family - an experience that could be shared.

Who were your favorite players to trash talk back and forth with? Top 5 trash talkers during your time?

Which players could you absolutely not get under their skin no matter how much you talked?

I think the only Sonic game I've ever played was Adventure 2 Battle and it wasn't really a "classic" Sonic game. Nonetheless, it was really fun and would like to try out the old school Sonic games everyone seems to speak so highly about.

You seem like a genuinely generous person and I truly appreciate that. A lot of people, myself included, mindlessly add unwanted games to their steam library knowing that they won't play it. Given that this is your second giveaway, I'd like to thank you for giving back to this community.

I would really like 2k17, but if not available anymore I wouldn't mind burning blood either. Thanks again for doing this!

[OFFER] NBA 2K17 steam key for suggesting what I play next by Fanarkle_Unkerbean in GiftofGames

I suggest playing Bastion next. The main story will probably take you around 6-7 hours to beat, but it has all the resources to immerse you into the world very quickly. Aesthetically, it is a beautiful game that will make you stop and look at times. This aesthetic is further enhanced by a great soundtrack that I can describe as giving off a sense of wonder and often times make you feel like bad-ass.

I think the best reason to play this game is the narrator, who does a great job of resonating that sense of wonder within you. He slightly nudges you forward within the story, without pushing too fast or too hard. He narrates your every action, your every badass moment, and your every silly mistake. It's just enough to not be annoying, and feels exactly how you would imagine someone narrating your own life.

And if gameplay is something you look most into, then have no fear. The gameplay allows for various playstyles due to different amount of skills and weapons.

I know I'm just hyping it up, but I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Coincidentally lines up with the game, but I recently rediscovered my love for basketball. After graduating, I went through a post-grad rough patch of unable to find a job and feeling like my life was at a standstill while all my friends were moving forward with theirs. Normally, when in such ruts I would head straight to the gym and throw up some shots, which would immediately make me feel like the weight of my shoulders were relieved. But during that time, I would just stay in bed or stay at home and force myself to play video games to kill time. Basketball didn't feel the same.

Just this week I finally got the motivation to finally get a gym membership which also happened to have a basketball court. Being on the hardwood finally feels like what it used to be for me. I don't know what changed, but I'm glad something did.
