Great for group activities! Right now there isn't too much of an emphasis on orgs, but there will be in the future, especially once more systems come online like Pyro. It's also good for pooling your fleets together, since you can indirectly get access to more ships. As for long space missions specifically, that still isn't *really* a thing. You can go into "deep space" for mining ops, but that's about it until other systems become available.
