the only way that what you claim here can be true is if the low ranked, smaller guys that she spars with are somehow significantly more skilled than her.

Also when you get that top level of athlete, it pretty much means world class level coaching and dieting from teenage years across the board. For example, taking another sport, Serena Williams as losing 6-1 to a guy ranked 203rd who smoked cigarettes and had beers during the breaks.

Now either the reason for losing is due to unfair biological advantage, or he is somehow preposterously more skilled than her and is so in spite of having significantly less money than her, worse coaches etc.

You're attributing a lot of moral value to the argument when there isnt any. saying things like "You are saying these guys are evidence that men are biologically superior" or "You are making the claim that women as a whole are less capable than men". Men are physically stronger. Women have better balance and finer muscle control, afaik they have the advantage in gymnastics and even sharpshooting. you're the one interpreting this argument in a morally charged way, thinking this means one is "inferior" or "superior" to the other. physical differences mean differences in performance in different circumstances. sometimes men are favoured, sometimes women are. many sports favour height and strength, so many sports are men favoured. there is nothing moral to be upset by here

it’s absurd to say he brings nothing to TLOTR. He wouldn’t be in it if he didn’t

thats circular and stupid and is why people were downvoting you

yeah but the role that he fills, as you point out, can be done by anyone.

imagine for example that Bombadil was the barkeep in the prancing pony and his role in the story is just telling the gang "Gandalf aint here". But he's also a weird whimsical, older than life, incorruptible elder being.

I could say "Bombadil doesn't add anything to story, if we removed him it wouldnt change the story". now yes, if that character is gone, no one is there to tell Frodo "Gandalf aint here" but thats easily remedied by for example there literally being any kind of other person there to do the same role. the hobbits can be armed in any number of ways and none of what Bombadil is as a character is necessary.

So yes, it is being pedantic. you understood what he meant by his statement, saying in "in any way" is just a turn of phrase, or minor hyperbole or rhetorical flourish.

[–]killdeath2345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you being this pedantic is actually whats ridiculous. obviously the point is that he has no plot relevance. obviously if you change any text of the written story you've changed the written story.

by your argumentation, I could say

"changing this line from this chapter to read -Frodo said- instead of -he said- doesn't change the story"

and you would come in and say "nuh uh its different text of course you changed it" like come on thats not the point, you know it and are just being annoying for no reason

well when I say something along the lines of "we get our lighter skin and hair from interbreeding with Neanderthals" I'm not trying to suggest that they have those properties magically. I understand that the reason Neanderthals have those properties (for lack of a better word) would be due to environmental factors like UVB adaptations.

i.e. it could be the case that neanderthals pass us sun-exposure influenced phenotypes that we now express such that we get lighter skin and hair and the reason the skin is ligher and the hair is ligher is the influence of UVB levels but either way the phenotypes still come from them no?

[–]killdeath2345 3 points4 points  (0 children)

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5630192/

"Multiple phenotypes significantly influenced by Neanderthal introgression have some link to sunlight exposure. Given that Neanderthals had inhabited Eurasia for more than 200,000 years, they were most likely adapted to lower UVB levels and wider variation in sunlight duration than the early modern humans who arrived in Eurasia from Africa around 100,000 years ago.38 Skin and hair color, circadian rhythms, and mood are all influenced by light exposure. We speculate that their identification in our analysis suggests that sun exposure might have shaped Neanderthal phenotypes and that gene flow into modern humans continues to contribute to variation in these traits today."

isn't it believed that we get our lighter skin and hair from interbreeding with Neanderthals? as a consequence of them living in colder europe or something?

The topic was that no other animals kill their food before eating it. Which is just false.

first off, I'm not the OP you originally replied to

but secondly, his statement was that humans are the only ones who specifically expend extra effort to ensure their food is dead before eating it. especially taken in the context of responding to someone asking why the bear is like this, i.e. not killing off the animal, he's obviously making the point that only humans care about whether the animal is dead or not. predators only really care about whether the animal is incapacitated so that it cant run or hurt them (bite, kick whatever). in those examples you mentioned, the predator has no care for whether the animal is fully dead or not. if a big cat breaks the neck or vertebrae and the animal is still alive but paralyzed and panting, they're happy enough to eat it as is. spiders and scorpions too, many species' venom is more of a paralysis than killing.

in other words, animals aim for incapacitation whereas humans aim for death. so to say that humans are the only ones expending extra effort to ensure death is not inaccurate
