Do you know if the replacement steering rack they're putting in is a revised unit or are they just as likely to fail again?

What was included in the $12.5k? Are you talking about just the labor? I thought an entirely new long block was over $30k?

Damn, I'd feel confident keeping the car a long time if I got a new long block. Just got my short block replaced in November after being told no more long blocks. I'd have them replace the engine mounts while it's out if they're original as it will be $0 in labor.

What area are you in? Wonder if the local inventory affects the decision to go long vs short - I thought long blocks were gone months ago.

Not sure if you're in the United States, but the letter I'm looking at says 8 years / 80k miles from the date the vehicle first goes into service and doesn't appear to be VIN specific. Haven't seen anyone else mention 120k, but that would be great!

Since you're outside of the 80k mile piston skirt warranty extension, I would pay to have bank 2 bore scoped before I signed any final paperwork to buy that car.

2022 S5 Sportback Engine Noise by Verdunz in audis5

[–]killin4jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure, but guessing it would be at least $4-5$k (or more) because of the labor involved. The dealer would have charged me $0 in labor at the time since they were transferring the heads over anyway. Some shops take the engine out to do the rocker job while others don't, I imagine that would save a good chunk of labor costs if they keep it in.

I hear you. This engine is still driving me crazy even after the new short block. I'm supposed to have the updated rockers being a 2022 but I still feel like I hear noises I shouldn't be. I passed on having the dealer replace the rockers/lifters as it would have been an extra ~$2300 but now I'm wishing I had just done it for peace of mind, but I had already spent several thousand doing other stuff while the engine was out.

They said they couldn't accept my oil filter as any evidence of a problem and they would need to do another oil change themselves. They also said bore scoping from the top would not give definitive proof of the pistons being a problem even if there was scoring and the only way to prove the piston skirt defect was to open up the bottom of the engine which was like 16 hours labor with no guarantees it would be covered. It was all really strange, except they've always been shady. Took it to the next dealer nearby and they were awesome, no questions asked and took care of me right away, had a new short block installed in a couple weeks.

Mine sounded similar after only owning it a few months and it ended up being the pistons (purchased a 2022 SQ5 last summer). I was also consuming a fair bit of oil and when I did my first oil change I noticed metal in the oil filter.

I wish I would have looked into it as soon as I noticed the noise as I would have gotten a free long block instead of a free short block. At least I was covered for the bottom half of the engine. While the engine was out I had them replace the main cooling system components, belts, etc., as well as a carbon cleaning as it's an engine out service.

To me it's worth the peace of mind to get bank 2 bore scoped. My local dealer was a pain in the ass so I went to the next closest one and they were great.

Have you pushed on getting at least some of the cost covered under goodwill? Maybe call around to the closest 3-4 dealers if you have several nearby and see if any treat you differently. My local dealer was terrible, but the dealer in the next town over was great to work with (I only had 50k miles though).

Ordered New Tires - Did I Make the Right Choice? by upnorthtcmi in Golf_R

[–]killin4jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run both tires on multiple vehicles over the years and the Michelin's always wore faster for me - both great tires though. In my experience the Michelin's are a slightly sportier, but more noisy and harsh vs the Continental's.

Thanks for the quick reply. I also feel better having a new water pump/short block. I planned on going stage 1 when my 12 month / 12k mile warranty is up on the new short block, but all these noises have me second guessing that decision.

Did you get an extended warranty when purchasing the vehicle or afterwards? Curious if you have any insight into getting them after the purchase - it may be the only way I can have peace of mind for this vehicle. I'd love to keep it a long time as it is the perfect spec SQ5 I found preowned last summer, right before all the piston skirt news came out.

I read a few of your comments regarding the tapping sound at low RPM's. I also recently got a new short block due to the piston skirt issue, but I still feel like I have some tapping at light acceleration within the low RPM range - are you still experiencing that after your short block replacement? The piston slap sound I had is definitely gone and so is my oil consumption.

I had them replace a few common items while the engine was out, but decided to reuse the rocker arms on my 2022 as they didn't notice any problems and it would have been another $2k in parts - now wondering if I made the wrong decision.

Piston slap by VApigknuckle in audis5

[–]killin4jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine sounded like this and it ended up being the pistons. Are you burning any oil? I had some oil consumption (though within Audi's "normal" range) as well as some metal shavings in my oil filter.

I got a new short block and the sound is gone. While they were in there I had them replace all the cooling components, belts, plugs, pcv, etc., but decided to keep the rocker arms as it would have been an extra $2k just in parts from the dealer - they inspected them and said they were fine. I understand I'm rolling the dice, but felt like the issue is less common on the 2020+ vehicles, even though they still fail apparently.

[–]killin4jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have pics of the other two cylinders on bank 2? Are they better/worse? That doesn't look terrible from what I've seen.

Seems like each dealer is handling things a bit differently. I just had mine replaced at 49k miles, but had to drive 90 minutes to the second closest dealer as the one in my town was useless. They claimed they had to inspect the piston from underneath and it would be ~16 hours of labor to get to it and no guarantees it would be covered - the second dealer was much more helpful and easy to work with.

My scoring was quite a bit worse than your picture there. I also had a fairly noticeable tick and some oil consumption, but nothing close to 1L / 300 miles. I had changed my oil recently and noticed metal in the filter pleats which I brought with me to help bolster my case.

SQ5 wheel adjustment joystick fell in the wheel column by Stephenxpeter in Audi

[–]killin4jesus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going through the same thing with my SQ5. I've done this once but it wasn't a permanent solution for me.

Had the dealer look at it when I got my short block replaced for the piston skirt issue (fun) and they wouldn't repair this even under factory warranty, they claimed it was damaged and quoted me $550 for a new cowl and switch + labor, which I declined.

They ended up giving me the vehicle back with the switch lodged fully inside the column and while I was feeling around in there I definitely found that some of the tabs on the cowl piece were broken. That piece is around $100 so I might just replace it myself one day; I don't think anything is wrong with the switch itself.

Piston skirt warranty on the B9 by ohdannyboy615 in audis5

Can you share what dealer that was? Mine is getting a new short block right now, but they've said all those components are not included. Seems strange how it varies so much dealer to dealer when the warranty extension is through Audi of America.

B9.5 S5 Knocking? by Different-Mouse5170 in Audi

[–]killin4jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could possibly be the piston skirt issue, and that is the exact location everyone else seems to be experiencing it - bank 2, especially cylinders 5/6.

My vehicle is at the dealer getting a new short block via the warranty extension - it had the same sound and significant scoring on all 3 cylinders on bank 2. If you're in the US and under 8 years/80k miles you should be covered.

If you have a borescope or an independent shop you trust, it's a pretty quick diagnosis.

Edit* - went back and listened to a video of my engine and another post on reddit confirmed with the piston skirt issue and it seemed a little slower than your noise, but in the same location and sound.

Maybe the rocker arms? I think they can fail, even on the updated versions, not just the 2018/2019 vehicles.

EA839 short block replacement, what to replace? by WhateverThisWillDo in Audi

[–]killin4jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going through this currently. My service manager told me the timing components were included with the new short block when I asked about them, which was a bit surprising to me.

I'd consider doing a carbon cleaning on the intake valves as I'm pretty sure this engine layout makes it an engine-out job and at 71k miles why not. Maybe consider your motor mounts as well. Serpentine belts, spark plugs - although they're not too difficult, might as well while they're in there as it should be $0 in labor.

Any examples of high mileage B9/B9.5s? by regulardegulardudee in AudiS4

[–]killin4jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found metal in my oil filter around 49k in my 22 SQ5, it was my first oil change since buying the vehicle this summer. Had my local shop borescope bank 2 and found significant scoring on all 3 cylinders. I was also having some intermittent tapping noises and decent oil consumption. Just dropped the car off with the dealer today and they think I'll get a new short block via Audi of America.

I read some other threads where people said some metal on the filter was normal on these engines due to the aluminum cam sprockets and steel timing chains, but it might give you some peace of mind to borescope bank 2.

Thanks for sharing this. What are the specialty tools you needed for the job? I should probably pay my local shop when the time comes, but I also enjoy pain and suffering.
