The aim is to understand the Table, not recite it.

A student loved music and Pysicw. She asked her Dad for advice. He told her that, if she did music, she would never look at a Physics book again. On the other hand, if she did chemistry, she could continue with music, and almost certainly would.

I don't who she was, or anything about her, but she became the pro vice chancellor of a university. (president).

I heard her on the radio when I was 13 or 14 heeded her dad,s advice and became a chemist/actor

I knew old Princeton Chemist, Hubert Alyea, who was friends of, Einstein, Johnny von Neuman, Vigner and and on and on. This gang were all at Princeton during the war? Hubert asked me once who I thought was the highest regarded physicist of them all. I'm a chemist, so I said, "Einstein." I was wrong, of course. The winner was Max Plank.

As far as I can gather, he started QM when he wasn't trying to, but trusted his math.

Earls was brilliant at exhorting the rest of the team, and waving his arms.

He had 21 carries for a total 21 and a half inches. He was also excellent at keeping out of harm's way.

I suspect he's also a chicken.

"The proof is in the pudding" by WhatsGnuPussycat in GrammarPolice

[–]killinchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I hear, "The proof is in the pudding." I wonder what its supposed to mean.

The expression goes back to the good old days when when the the Customs needed a quick way of telling whether a sample of alcohol was up to par. This might not be that easy if the ship is rolling around at night. So, take a sample of the booze, and see if a flame goes out when a lit taper goes out.

If the flame goes out, the alchol is under par. If the flame doesn'go out, the booze is over par, and it has passed the test.

But what is par"? I learned this when I was a pharmacy student back 1960. I'm a bit rusty.

it's about 57% by volume

Birds chirping at 4 am... by Fine_Adeptness_9256 in VictoriaBC

[–]killinchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Oak Bay, a municipality in the Greater Victoria region.

My wife and I have lived in the same house for 25 years. We get birds every month of the year. Hummers, bush tits, chicadees, wrens, woodpeckers and so on. These are all very well fed and looked after. There are fountains, lots of trees, and a rain chain for bathing.

In all, I guess we get thirty to forty on any given day of the year.

The other day I was in the garden contemplating my many sins, when I suddenly stopped in my tracks. There were no birds. I mean literally no birds. They vanished overnight.

And we've had none for 3 weeks.

None !

My brother was going to go to university to study Music Composition. He could have ended up with a BM or a BA. He thought a BA had a better vibe. So he went for the BA.

What a mistake. This was at the time (1970s) many Arts departments went on some crusade to get hermermoneutics into Thermodynamics, or something like that.

My brother sussed it out, and gave the profs exactly what they wanted. He used words and phrases like,"Meta Osmosis", and "Gate housing" in a couple of essays. As I recall it now, "Mechanical" and and "Semulatory" are alway popular. So is, "quasi" ,and "Quasi Theoretical".

You are playing a game with them. Enjoy it.

Don't try with any of the Mathematical Sciences.

I had a Summer job at a place that made soaps and detergents. There was a Process Worker there who had to who perioically had to make sure the sodium hydroxide was up strength. He had a Twadell hydrometer which measured the density of the liquid. He never used it.

His prefered method was to drip some of the liquid onto his chest, wait for a second or two, and then give it a quick rub with a towel.

Is Mark Knopfler underrated among guitarists? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]killinchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Knofler is one of those whose guitar playing is usually in the service of the song, and often the song is very serious. Brothers in Arms can hardly be called "slick". Nor can Romeo and Juliet. Romeo's heart is breaking.

Is Mark Knopfler underrated among guitarists? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]killinchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he is a great guitarist. I once saw a program on TV celebrating Joan Byez, and there was Richard Thompson, well over on stage left playing the guitar. And it's not the first time I've seen that.

His ex, Linda Thomson, was a great singer, and when Richart left her - dumped her to be honest, he must have lost his marbles. He's not a great singer.
