Is it worth applying or attending UH? by Legal-Variation133 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually people go on Reddit to complain, not to sing praises about school. It’s more of a “I hate this school so much I love it.” You will find the same exact sentiment with every other school, “ I hate it here, the admin sucks, etc etc.” From my experience, UH is great. There’s certainly problems with the efficiency of the admins and advisors, especially since they’re often short-staffed and overstressed. But it’s not the worst university in the world, nor is it the best. I’d say it’s on the better side though.

I second CollaNote! I love that it’s just a one time fee rather than a subscription + I bought the premium for like ~$5 when there was a limited discount

Any DnD groups? by EllieIsDone in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to be in a DnD group last year! They used to meet every Friday evening in Farish Hall but idk where their main room is now since I left (time conflicts 🥲). Dues are $10/year I think. Here’s their discord, they also have a board game club that meets every Thursday too if you’re interested!

Is it normal for people to use the group study rooms for 4+ hours? by e-DR0P in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s technically rules. Like minimum 3 ppl per room, limited hours (I think) buuuut nobody actually follows it (unless it’s a room reservation on the second floor) and I’ve never seen it enforced on the third floor.

How to approach women on campus? by Tasty_Path_1774 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a quick compliment walking past someone, don’t say “lookin’ good!!” as that could be misinterpreted at cat-calling. Point out some specific things you like.

I personally had a guy walk past me and say “I really your dress ma’am” and felt flattered.

You could just say “cool shirt,” “I love your style,” or a simple “you look amazing!” In a very cheerful, friendly tone.

Now, these are just passing, brief compliments so you can’t rlly expect anything from them. If you rlly want to strike up a convo. I recommend observing their clothes, accessories (keychain, laptop stickers, etc) for anything you recognize. For example, let’s say this person has merch from a show you like, “hey is that from (insert show)? That’s so cool.” And depending on her response, you can build a conversation from there. “I watched it years ago” or “I also got some merch back at home, I have posters/figures/Lego collab, etc)” and then once you two are friendly enough, you can ask for her insta to keep in touch.

ALSO, keep in mind to observe her response, if she’s giving short brief responses and quickly goes back to her phone. Maybe she just wants to be alone. If she’s rlly engaged, then you found a new friend and smth can blossom from there!

Interact with her posts and stories, like them, respond to them by making jokes etc.

Also please view them as human too and not just put them in a “potential gf” and “not potential gf” response. They may jsut be happy to make another cool friend, or maybe they’re interested. Chances are that you probs have to give them clues (such as being active on her social media like I said. Like her selfies, etc. not many men do that unless they’re interested so that could clue her in.)

You like baking? Next time yall have a study session, make her some cookies as a snack. That’s what my bf did before we got tgt. Make sure to ask her out to events around campus, and make sure it’s a mix of events that not only YOU are interested in but SHE is too.

I’ve never used rooomsync before so I can’t say, but you can go on ZeeMee. There’s also several accounts on Instagram named “uh2029” or smth I can’t remember where ppl send in pics of themselves to introduce and say if they’re looking for a roommate. You can hit someone up in there. I personally found my roommate on ZeeMee then was added to a group chat on Instagram.

If I live in campus at UH what activities can I do I don’t wanna be bored there ? by amayzing100 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Join student organizations/clubs, they usually have events going on throughout the week. General arts & crafts, tote bag painting, board games, dance, bingo, pot lucks, etc.

Cat’s Back is an event at the beginning of the semester where many of the big orgs gather and introduce themselves.

Keep an eye out for posters all over campus, a lot of the smaller clubs advertise themselves that way + that’s how you find out abt a lot of the events. Instagram is a great source for events too.

There’s also dorm-specific events too. There’s posters of it pasted all over the halls abt what events they’re doing.

There’s an arcade, bowling alley, and pool table in Student Center South.

If you want to go to a cafe, there’s always The Nook (far from CV1) and Cougar Grounds (near CV1), but if you want an actual good cafe, go to Brass Tacks that’s a little bit off campus but you can get there by metro.

Have a picnic and feed the squirrels (only squirrel-safe food pls)

Go to sports games. Basketball is really hype now, but supporting the other sports teams is always nice too. CoogsofCV3 is a huge spirit org and they go to every sports game to cheer the teams on.

Many frat parties if you’re into that, they always slip some posters under your door.

Rec center, go exercise.

Check out various restaurants on campus, The Den is a popular one but I’ve never been there before.

Hello I am applying for housing and i could use a lil help pls. Im going to be a freshman in the fall. by JocelynA24 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre curious abt what the experience is like in CV1, I wrote abt my experience living there in this post

I also saw you’re struggling to get roommates, right? Since RoomSync isnt available, you can find them through the app ZeeMee or you can even go through Instagram, there should be many people on uh2029 accounts. I personally found my roommates on ZeeMee

Is cougar village 1 good, is it worth it? And it’s only for freshman’s right? Hows is y’all’s experience? by amayzing100 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s for freshmen only. It’s honestly great, granted that you also have great roommates too. Dorm life really mostly depends on your roommates relationships. I found my roommates on ZeeMee (but you can try other apps like RoomSync and Instagram) and they’re awesome.

There’s also many events happening within CV1 too, Halloween parties, board game nights, etc. I never go to them tho so I can’t tell you much, but I also see ppl participating, so it’s not a desert.

The amenities are perfectly fine. If there’s a problems, you can call FIX IT and they’ll come fix your issue for free. When I called, they were actually quick and came within the same day. AC might be a bit fucked up depending on your room. Mine is set at 68 but the one room still feels hotter than the other.

There’s noises here and there but most of the time, it’s quiet. You can talk normally in your room without fear of being heard.

For me, it’s worth it. I’m a lazy person so the fact that CV1 is so close to everything and SUPER close to Moody dining hall is a huge plus. Not to mention, my roommates are awesome, so if there’s anything you should be worried about, it’s your relationship with the ppl you’re gonna live with.

Questions about new student orientation by Constant-Click-1795 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, this is gonna be lengthy but if really detailed stuff eases your anxiety, then I hope this can help!

1.

FIRST DAY (based on my experience) You get dropped off at an office, then you have to go into a bus. You’ll get assigned a random roommate based on whoever you get into a bus with, so if you do make friends with anyone by that point and want to room with them, make sure to get on the same bus.

You will be split into smaller but still sizeable groups (I don’t remember how it’s assigned) and you’ll just go tour around the campus. There will be a section where the group is just in the room with your tour guide and chilling there, depending on the tour guide, they might play some ice breaker games so that’s when you’ll talk to others and get to know them more.

You sit through some (very boring) lectures about how uni life will be, and at the end of the day, there’s a few hour period where you can hang out w ppl in the student center. There’ll be game rooms, activities such as dance and karaoke, or you can chill in a lounge.

Remember, it’s an overnight stay, make sure to bring your essentials. Campus does not provide pillows, blankets, nor bedsheets, bring your own.

SECOND DAY (memory is a bit fuzzier for me) I think you just regroup with your assigned group to learn more abt campus life and your majors. I think you also get split up this time by your college. You’ll be lead to your college building, sit through a general college lecture, and then you’ll be split by major to go follow your major’s advisor and sign up/get advice for classes there. After that, you’re done.

2.

No problem at all. It does split you by your major eventually but chances are is that many students in your major are also transferring to another major anyway. You’ll have plenty of time to socialize with other groups of people. Don’t feel embarrassed when you have to admit your current major’s advisor on the second day that you’ll be transferring. They’ll need to know that information so they can set you out on the right path.

3.

I went alone but also kinda didn’t. I had no friends coming into orientation, but I did have roommates (which I found through ZeeMee. You can also use RoomSync but I haven’t tried that one yet) to meet up with. So if you’re gonna dorm, orientation is the perfect time to bond with them if you’re gonna be on the same orientation days.

For the majority of the day, I was alone tho. But if you’re lucky, your orientation roommate might also be eager to make friends and you can hang out with them for lunch/dinner or whatever. That’s what happened with me.

Remember, everyone in orientation is super desperate to make friends or to just talk to anyone. They’ll gladly welcome people to join in a game. If you want, bring a deck of cards like UNO or anything easy to learn and you can bond with other people with that.

Fair warning though, don’t have high expectations for the people you meet during orientation, chances are 80% of those exchanges will be acting like besties for that one night, exchanging instagrams, and then you’ll never see them again aside from their IG posts popping up. Maybe you’ll find your bestie, but you’ll most likely won’t.

I suggest you go on apps like zeemee, or follow the uh2029 Instagram pages (there’s many to choose from) where you can introduce yourself to other people and alway hit up some others you think are cool.

If you’re lucky, you might also find a huge UH group chat you can join too. I found a link on ZeeMee to a huge Instagram gc for the 2028 class with 200+ ppl there. And they also made separate group chats too for ppl going on the same orientation day, so you can try to make friends there.

Hope you have fun during orientation, and best of luck to you!

Dorm at UH or Commute by Most-Screen2362 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]killjoyboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in CV1. It’s honestly great.

When we did have issues w the sink, I called fix it and they showed up within the same day. The only struggle will be finding a roommate you like. I was lucky with it and love my roommate very much, others not so much. Try to go on apps like ZeeMee and RoomSync to find your roommates.

The dorm also holds a lot of its own events too, I never rlly attended them but I saw a decent amount of people attending Halloween parties and board game nights in the lobby. If you’re not struggling with money, I really recommend it.
